One night my wife and I watched a PBS documentary on Michelangelo Caravaggio. I was fascinated not only by the beauty of his paintings, but of the man himself. Deeply religious but also quite a dangerous man. The Catholic church commissioned many pieces, and some had to be turned down because they were too dark or lacked taste (using prostitutes as models for Mary). He'd often finish paintings and wander the tennis courts of Rome looking for a sword duel. Read up on him, you won't be disappointed.

Anyway, I wrote this song about him. It was originally intended to be from a third person perspective. Like a friend watching him rise to fame but lamenting the danger the painter posed to himself. I didn't quite pull it off, but there are elements of that direction in there.

It has a 'Verouria" sound to it in the chorus, but not enough to warrant a lawsuit. As if Frank Black would ever hear it anyway. Or care.

Going out tonight
Sword drawn by your side
The thugs of courts will know
Of Caravaggio

Gods and courtesans
Born of troubled hands
so all of Rome will know
Of Caravaggio

But the praises that you get
Are going to your head

A life in disarray
Painting filth and faith
So all the world will know
Of Caravaggio

Tomassoni stole your love
So you'll sign your name in blood

The Sword is drawn the blood is spilled
You stand before the man you've killed
A host of angels gathers 'round
You throw sword onto the ground
Beware to those who dare inflame
Both man and God they will remember the name

This is
a wonder tribute to a medival Icon who in my opinion was way ahead of his time not in his paintings but his aspect on life and how he lived it. A great song I loved it!

I think he was ahead of his time in a lot of ways. Not dangerous or mad because it was fashionable, but because he was actually dangerous and a little mad. Aren't all the best ones like that?

Thanks, Vic
Art school sounds like a dream. If only I could actually create. I'll audit all the art history courses :)

I was really concerned with the Pixies thing when my old band would play this tune live. It was never my intent to lift it. After playing it a few times I realized I'd heard those first 5 notes before. Oops.

Thanks for the compliment, Dave. I can't stand my voice, but I'm glad you enjoy it. I'm thinking about hiring out Ridd for all the vocal duties :). I appreciate you stopping by. You've put some great stuff up lately. I need to catch up.

I love
a vocally driven song. Nice backdrop for your great voice. So unusual a subject for a song with this orchestration. I remember thinking that about Vincent. Thanks.

one of
my first concert was a great Don McLean show. Some drunk kept screaming "Play Starry Starry Night, man!" Don was cool and just ignored the guy, but I wanted to know why the "Play some Skynyrd, man" guy had shown up and if he was so crazy about the song... why didn't he know the name of it?

ANYWAY, thanks for your compliments. My hope when I do these songs about historical figures is that people who haven't heard of them or their stories will research them out. Thanks again for listening!
TobinMueller said 3587 days ago (May 26th, 2009)
Using painters to inspire is a great idea. Some many great images, great stories. It is both disorienting and centering to look back at lives, sometimes famous (and infamous), sometimes distressingly anonymous (in their own times), and then to view their work as nearly immortal. How does that change how you create? How does that change how we view our own art? So many lives, works, visions. Thanks for bringing not just Caravaggio but hundreds of others to mind. I dug the song too.

you ask
a lot of great questions. My hope is that we don't let any of that change how we create. To create in anticipation of fame in this life or afterward could end up cheating us out of a TRULY creative experience. Thanks for listening and commenting. I'm honored you took the time.

Hey I'm not supposed to learn about history while rocking out at the same time! If you were my history teacher I would have gotten an "A" for sure! Love it

you would have gotten an "A". But it would have had nothing to do with academics and everything to do with cuddling.

I like this very much, I do. Really cool guitars and I love the lyrics. Ballsy to drop out everything but the drums and vocals for the break - it works really well. I could hear this really breaking loose at the end with some heavier distortion, but I really like it this way as well. Awesome vocals, eric, and a great mix to boot. yer good, son.

not likely. Just bad mixing on my part. It's supposed to be drums, bass, and vocals.

Thanks for stopping by and listening. I really dig your latest. It's good to be back, huh?
rsorensen said 3583 days ago (May 30th, 2009)
it's not your mixing. i listened to it originally on my comp speakers. still ballsy though imo

the praises that you get
i've often wandered the tennis courts of my neighborhood looking for a sword fight. so i get this.

seriously dude this is a great tune. straight to the ipod. you and relic are keeping me happy on MJ these days. love the "the sword is drawn and blood is spilled" verse, great lyrics and perfect snotty delivery. keep 'em coming!

There can only be one Highlander, so I'm sure your challenger is lurking.

Thanks for the compliment. It's good to get praise from a pop master, but I won't let it go to my head. Wouldn't want to end up like crazy ol' Caravaggio. And yes, Isn't Relic's Delorean tune totally boss? My friend and I were talking the other day about how we're jealous we didn't write it.

Back for seconds
and a decent comment. First ... I am always so impressed by your ability to nail a hook and harmony .... sorry I am a pop whore at heart. The whole mix is pretty darn cool to the ears. Not at all a negative that it is intelligent rock as well. Man ... this is just good stuff ... but ... I am a pop whore.

I'm not ashamed to say I'm a pop whore, too. A catchy hook in any genre gets me going. I'm flattered my hook does this for you.

The Lyrics
are amazing, especially the last verse. It got me to thinking, who did he plagiarize this from ? Catchy tune as usual, and you're really getting your sound nailed down here.Cheers

The better question is who am I not ripping off. It's all been done, you know? It does feel good to get lyrical props from one of MJ's best lyracists.
Relic67 said 3583 days ago (May 29th, 2009)
really cool
great catchy pop song.
I see you like Fenders... me too!
One of the great things about this one is the arrangement. You keep it varied throughout the tune so it's really dynamic-sounding. It doesn't come off as a Pixies rip to me. thanks for complimenting my song, it's not as good as this one.
By the way, if you haven't read it, I would highly recommend the book "the lost painting - quest for the lost caravaggio" by Jonathan Harr.
it's a fantastic book, a real page turner. ( and a true story)

I can't put my finger on it, because I'm not Mr. Guitar, but if I wasn't such a Tele lover, I'd probably be a strat lover. I'll definitely have to check out that book. I'm usually only interested in non-fiction books. There's book on Columbine that I'm really interested in. When I finish that, I'll check out this Caravaggio book. Sounds up my alley for sure!

I really like...
...historical references in music. You did a really nice job with this one. Not too complicated, yet there's some depth to the lyrics. Ok, now you have to go listen to Yes' "Turn of The Century" on the album Going For The One.

Thanks for the compliment. I only know what an hourlong doc on PBS told me. The little reading I did after that was certainly intriguing, though.
