Modern Times

Get Flash to see this player.

Nope, I didn't write this song last week. More like twenty five years ago. Funny how some things don't change isn't it? I think this recording was made on a cassette recorder fifteen to twenty years ago. I haven't changed much either have I?

Well I have seen so much change, people get angry feel so strange
Things get crazy feel the pain, sun never shines it's always the rain.

Modern times, just modern times . . . modern times, modern times

And I just want to get away.

Big corporations have no soul only care about bringing in the gold
Spew out poisons live for today, no future tomorrow, where will your children play?

Government is run by those with the bucks and if you don't have any you're out of luck.
Cast your vote all you get are lies, deceit, corruption, and corporate ties.

Beautiful country, plenty of room. Crammed into cities you die too soon!
Automobiles a way of life, carbon monoxide cuts like a knife.

Thanks Feter! This song had a very echoey room ambiance on it and some reverb that was added also. I thought it might be a little too much but if you think it is one of my best recordings then maybe I should record all of them like that.

A sad commentary
That a song such as this is still as relevant, maybe even more so, than it was a quarter century ago. How little progress we seem to have made.

The song is amazing even though the subject is less than encouraging. Your voice gives it such a nice, solid, woeful sound. It's truly a great tune for the time, 25 years ago or today.

Sad song
Yes, it is a sad song. Perhaps too sad. I started to post it a half dozen times or more but always decided it was too dark and melancholy. I finally decided that you never know how they will be received until you go ahead and put them out there so I finally did. I'm glad you could appreciate it for what it is.

It really seems
to me that you guitar work is really getting stronger in sound texture. Enjoy the reverb quality. You SURE have a Hank Williams Jr. texture in your voice. Enjoy that quality alot. Nice bending of the strings in the those key places.

Nice combination Tom the picking guitar, and that deep soulful sound vocal. It is enjoyable to me to hear that hurt feel that you give out in so many of your tunes. Not that I want to see you feeling bad, but I think it is good soulful medication to get that sorrowful feeling out for us to hear !

Thanks for sharing !!

To verb or not to verb?
Thanks Bill! Sounds like I am hearing some votes for more reverb on my songs. Maybe I will give it a try on my next one.

Sound Quality
Well I did have a little stack of processors to go with the cassette recorder. One was a very nice reverb/echo unit which I think is what so many people are commenting on.

Another "for verb" vote here bro!
Damn your voice sounds good here Tom. Way to go! Lovely guitar work too.

RE the lyrics: The French have a proverb, the English of which runs, "The more it changes, the more it stays the same."

Well done my friend!

Take care!

Nice tune Tom,
It is what I would call a Western Classic, through and through!!
Lyrics are great, good music, very well sung!!

More reverb?? No, don`t do this! Your voice sounds good as is, no need for pumping it up unnaturally...

Congrats on a good one!

This could have been sung
in Dickensian times and still have been relevant(except 'horseless carriages' may not have been !)but its a belter of a song, even tho' it is bleak its real!!Great voice to go with it .

capital work here...
As always, soft crisp recording and excellent playing/singing, lulling the listener into a receptive state to receive and swallow the bitter pill of lyrics you deliver. Very well crafted look at the dingy side of Capitalism and human nature.

This one hits a peak for you, my friend. A really good recording of a really good vocal and guitar singing and playing a really good song. Extreme kudos. This is deep, smooth, and with a mellow "edginess." Cool.

Way Cool!
I just like this! Don't exactly know why, I think because I dig the fact that you have been doing your thing so long, and are a great songwriter. This song is nice, and I don't listen to this sort of music often. I am going to check out a lot more of your work!!!!

It's true
It's true and sad to say that a song like this can speak to us today as much as when you wrote it all those years ago. Nice lyrics with great imagery and a nice melody. Great vocal on this, too - suffused with soul. Very cool. Nicely done. Peace.

You sure have a fabulous voice--it sounds great on this beauty of a song (made on a cassette recorder?!) Very lyrical and hearfelt song and your playing here matches your voice--they are both outstanding. Thanks again for sharing this and take good care now, Michael

I love to play guitar. I have been writing songs for many years and have a large catalog by this time. Songwriting is easy. Writing great songs is hard! Born in Louisiana and live in Texas. I grew up on Chuck, Jerry Lee, Elvis, Ricky, Little Richard ... [see more]
