Cast Iron Chef

Get Flash to see this player.

Cast Iron Chef was sort of a commissioned work. I'm a sometime member of the S.C.A. - those crazy medieval re-creationists. One of my very good friends is a very good campfire cook, and I mooch off his skillet quite often in exchange for a song or two. Well, he had this "cast iron chef" contest one year, and he challenged me to come up with a theme song in exchange for food. This is a little sloppy (take one), but intentionally so, to give it a "jamming around the campfire" feel inspired by the Clancy Brothers, et al. Hope it makes you smile a bit!

David McCord Cast Iron Chef

They are choppin’ and a-grindin’ and a-slicin’ at the block,
Mixin’ up the sauces and a-spicin’ up the stock.
Come share with us my friends
This marvelous repast -
The best cuisine you’ll ever know
From the kitchen of the cast… iron chef.

Stokin’ and a-pokin’ coals to get the oven hot,
Fryin’ in the skillet and a-boilin’ in the pot.
The good food never ends
But sure it’s going fast -
The culinary artistry
From the skillet of the cast… iron chef.

It truly is a wonder how a smidge, a pinch, and measure,
Can really make a difference when they’re cookin’ up a treasure.
Oh the feast has just begun
And we’re going to have a blast.
Yes it’s gastronomic glory
From the caldrons of the cast iron chef.

You know that heaven’s comin’ when they start a-marinatin’.
Just lookin’ at the menu has us all a-salivatin’.
Hurry up and get in line!
You don’t want to be the last
When they start to serve it up
from the ladle of the cast… iron chef.

Grab a bowl and grab a dagger - grab a trencher and a cup,
And come along politely as we gather now to sup.
Don’t be shy, just have a seat –
The pots are being passed.
You know you’re gonna want some
From the fires of the cast… iron chef.

great tune....

in keeping with the Clancy Bros. influence. The penny whistle is choice... clear and bright as the sun. Just a perfect Irish folk song. Great vocals, fun lyrics, and good time had by all...

Another genre nailed. Any style you can't do? Really enjoyed this. Love the lyrics ("maranadin'...salivatin"), melody and sing along production. I have some camping/jamming/cooking buddies that will LOVE this. Great tune, David!

"Any style" is part of my identity crisis, I guess. What IS my style? I've no idea. I just do what I do, depending on where the muse takes me. Because I listen to such a wide range of music (Alice Cooper to Alison Krause, etc.) I get pulled every which-way. Usually, when the first phrase or two comes to me, it comes with a "feel" that begins to take shape early on and I just work it through. Sometimes wish I could "steer" the muse a little more.

Wonderful song David
You done good mate. Love the theme, and the way you covered it. This is a very cool tribute to the Culinary arts of the past, and possibly the future.

Wonderful song my friend,

Iron Chef!
Excellent! Sounds like an old standard already! What an energetic delivery. Really good stuff. Clever lyrics. Are all the voices your own? Sounds alive and happy. Food makes all the difference.

It's all me...
Oh, let's see... probably 10 "real" tracks in there. GarageBand on the iMac begins to choke a little at that point! Thanks for your kind words.

Cooking creatively
Fabulous sound. I love cooking - this could be my new cooking theme song. My ears wanted either more voices singing that loose (but really nice) harmony line, or a tighter (rhythmically) backing vocal. Love the clarity, the instrumentation, the up front nature of the mix. Great fun.

Just a folk singer. Well - mostly a folk singer, but I like to try just about every style a middle-class white guy from Mid-Michigan can sincerely try. Be sure to check out my "band" — I used to play R&R with these guys back in the 70s, but now we'... [see more]
