A Beggar I Will Stay

 Genre: Celtic

As noted before, I do the S.C.A. medieval re-creation thing now and then, in which I portray the role of a beggar. There are plenty of beggar songs around, but I just had to do my own theme song, right? Hope you like it.

A Beggar I Will Stay!

I come into another place, I take a look around.
Will someone recognize my face as I stroll into town?
And if I am a stranger here, can I see any sign
Of gaberlundzies come before in such a class as mine?

Sometimes I must be wary as I wander on my way.
Some places I can't tarry, but some others I can stay.
And all I own I carry, as I live from day to day.
Being dismal makes me merry, O A Beggar I Will Stay!
(I may) not be legendary, but A Beggar I Will Stay!

I may find a beggar's tree, or a mark upon the gate?
A friendly place to welcome me - put food upon my plate?
Huddled in a manger bed, as warm as I am dry,
As cozy as a regal head. Who sleeps as well as I?

The sky above and earth below, no borders do I keep
My belly full, no waste nor woe, the riches that I reap.
And so I sing when e'er I can and ply my meager trade.
I'm overall a happy man the way that I was made.

CHORUS (2wice)

Spare any change?
Love the mando and hand drum groove. Great neo--celtic, folk-rock feel to this. And you write a fine lyric, David. "gaberlundzies"? I'll be looking that one up. "being dismal makes me merry" ...love that line.

very tuneful and a lovely chorus. I've only recently started listening to traditional folk, and I really appreciate the honest ways in which this music is performed and recorded. excellent harmonies, too.
If I was to be picky (and I like to be!), using the the false cadence in the first chorus kinda undermines the effect it could have had later.

Just a folk singer. Well - mostly a folk singer, but I like to try just about every style a middle-class white guy from Mid-Michigan can sincerely try. Be sure to check out my "band" — I used to play R&R with these guys back in the 70s, but now we'... [see more]
