Happy Birthday Jack
To me, MacJams is a place of friends, friends that love to share. Sometimes we share music, other times we share life through a story or a video. Sometimes we just share a laugh in Chat... MacJams for many of us is life in a way... Sure we have other parts to our life but for some of us MacJams is that one place where we can dare to be more than ourselves. We know that MacJams will receive us and accept us. It is the people of MacJams that make it this way.
Jack was one of the first MacJammers I met shortly after I joined MacJams. There is a warmth to Jack... He can't help it. It radiates from him, warms everyone up and draws all of us in. But behind that radiance is a truly wonderful great guy... It's in his chat notes, it's in his music... It's simply in Jack.
Jack has been such a special part of my life since I joined MacJams that I wanted to do something little to commemorate his birthday. I decided a simple little birthday song would be fun... So I threw something together. With just me it was pretty simple and pretty lame... I needed help... I needed help badly... Heh... I had a problem though... I started this on Monday morning... Yes that's right... Monday 8/3/2009 at about 9:00 a.m. and I'm getting busy on a song for my friend... What an idiot I am to wait so long!
I figured ok well... hum... I'll just have to see what happens. So I sent it off to a few of the regulars here at MacJams and I was stunned by the response! I guess all that warmth and radiance Jack possesses has us all sucked in. People went out of their way to add whatever they could to this little silly project I started. I guess I should have figured with the love that Jack receives that this would become a project... It got busy real fast! I'm happy to be the originator and a small part of this... Jack deserves this and so much more...
So without further ado... Happy Birthday Jack... We think the world of you man! As was so aptly put by the Eagles back in roughly 1978/79:
Jack... "you can check out... but you can never leave" MacJams!
So on to the music... Ok... um... well how to describe this... I think Terry said it best in his last email to me: "Sounds like manure. (If manure had a sound, this would be it.)" Well Jack... Just imagine a large part of MacJams all playing and singing their hearts out for you and we sound like manure! Even Terry's additions could not reclaim us from the compost heap it seems! Anyway, manure or not... Jack this was for you!
But on the positive side, as you listen to this you need to realize a couple of things... First... I achieved the impossible... Sheila sang!!! Yes by God she sang and it is there in the mix for you to hear... Listen for the cute chirpy girl voice! Thats raw Sheila!!! The problem is she was so happy about actually singing she started to dance rather wildly, got a foot caught under a Mic stand and fell into the B3 and knocked it over... Well what's a B3 among friends eh? Plus it was pretty distracting to the band when she started to dance and was removing... er we kinda lost the groove for a moment... To make up for the B3 she provided her own toe song art! (She was certain you would like that... I won't ask...).
The second major achievement was Shay... Yes Jack... Shay sang too! She was right there next to Sheila singing her heart out for you! And like I suspected she was perfectly on key and she sounded beautiful although she got a little riled up when the B3 fell over and almost stepped on her dog which started barking... Luckily Logic 9 has the new "Dog Bark Removal PlugIn" It saved that take for sure. But I think Shay got a little punchy near the end and was laughing at Sheila or maybe it was me... I have no idea...
I failed at my third goal of getting Karen to sing... but at least she does speak... She made up for with some amazing ad-lib piano work. While she didn't sing I did con her out of some great "woots" which really are "woots" but rather "whats"... I think we can use them for something so I'll hang on to them.
Jack, the amazing thing about this track is how easily all these people from all over the country and overseas seemed to fit... It was like a virtual band... Most of these takes you hear in this track of manure are single takes... It was really something to see this come together. Like flies to ah... hum... er you get the idea!
Jack... They wouldn't have done it for me... It would take someone like you to make this happen. Happy Birthday Jack! It comes from the heart! :-] (Blame Terry for the name!)
A couple of final notes... There were some casualties of war... or um the compost heap... We are missing Char... I know she would have loved to have been on this and she will be disappointed but her computer seems to have been repaired by somebody in east Nairobi and they are shipping it back via Klong boat or something... And poor Gail... Jack... she tried... She made parts to go in but due to computer hiccups she had no way to send them over. You know that throw PC emoticon in Chat? Well I'm guessing Gail did that for real last night!
The biggest casualties were numerous and were my fault my friend and I apologize... It was my late start on this that made impossible for many people to join in... I only gave them a day... Some were traveling (Harold). Others couldn't get time to lay down tracks with busy lives. Some took one listen to the current version and defected quickly to iComp or some other site...
I'm sorry Jack... this last is my fault... You deserve better and maybe next year someone with some brains will take over management of your birthday present. Maybe you'll get something that is not from the compost heap!
Anyway... We love ya man... We sang and played our little hearts out for you!
