this was really a pain in the butt at first, the loop was kind of un-intimidating, so I got cocky. i then ran into a brick wall, threw everything out and had to start over again. then it just seemed to flow naturally for me. usually for these challenges I take the loop and write a song around it with organic instrumentation. on this one I decided to do everything in the box: no real instruments, no external keyboard, i even used the pinhole mic for the vocals. it was an exercise in self discipline (doing a piano solo is not easy for me in the piano roll). one more thing: this definitely a head phone song (especially the end vocals).
i took the loop, put it on a bunch of tracks, and then assigned it to different synths and sampler instruments. converted them all to audio and then started slicing and dicing (although some are left entirely intact). this morning I added a dub element to the song (just for kicks). everything you hear is the loop with the exception of drums, bass and vocals. there are no real lyrics, as I did a scratch vocal to build the song around, and then just got lazy and kept it. the title comes from the song being a tango (i think - what do i know), and in the middle of my mumbling the melody, i say something that sounds like silent. a lot of times when i write lyrics, I listen to my mumbled scratch track and write the lyrics around what the mumbles kind of sound like. didn't get that far this time. remind me to tell you the story sometime, about Buzz from the Melvins approach to lyric writing.
anyways, I hope you like. i had a great time. now on to listen to all the rest of the entries.
