Picture a Place

I wrote this twenty years ago to a different tune, and now i am resurrecting it. the first part is a melancholic, navel-gazing song-to-slash-your-wrists-by....but if you're still alive at 2.25 it morphs into a starkly contrasting progressive and positive instrumental section.

Picture a place by the river my dear,
row out the boat and I’ll wait for you there – there’s nothing to fear
Sing me a song that you know in your heart
Will reach us at times when we both are a part of emptiness clear
Mine is the colour and yours is the reason
The conman is caught and convicted of treason – let justice prevail
Where are we if we’re not free
Who are we supposed to be
Picture a place, no this time it’s too late
The ashes are dead – they rise from the grate – and float in the air

Sweet Darkness
This is a definite work of art. It seems that both sides came together to a wonderful place. I wonder if the disedent backing track might detrack. This is an incredible piece either way. A+

Nice playing and singing and good choice lyrics.
What effect are you putting on your vox?
I would have maybe bought some strings in at 3rd verse but that's just me , always overcrowding things.
And I like the build up at the end, especially the 3rd guitar coming in
Again I was hearing a harmonica coming in later ..but I really should mind me own business ;-)
Great track anyway

fantastic mood
another prove of the less is more theory. I'm a bit short with words today. Consider the less I say, the more I appreciate it. Splendid song.

Was distracted by your first line's similarity to "picture yourself in a boat on a river" from Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. But I soon got over that.

I like the minor key vibe, Nick Drake-like picking and your usual cool singing. You weave a great moody and gauzy web.

The instrumental section with interlocking
parts meshing and building is wonderful. Great guitar work! I especially like the organ part.

Hey, what about resolving to the major key? Just kidding...the minor key brings this all the way home.

There is definitely a melancholy feel going here, the vocal effect works for this tune. Resolves into a Doorsesque Dirge for the outro.

Cant remember if it was you before where I mentioned a high pitched sound in the background but I hear it on this one as well. Am I the only one that can hear it? It comes through very clearly on my system but I have a very high end sound system hooked up to my computer. Anyway, just figured I would let you know.

Enjoyed the song, great song writing and love the acoustic guitar work you interlace throughout this song.

paints a picture
excellent song. changing up the second half is great to kick it up a notch.

yeah there is a high pitch noise here maybe a little eq taper on the high end may tame it.

but all in all a great song

A moody masterpiece.
This might be a callus-biter but it's definitely not a depressing wrist-slitter. It's a Moody masterpiece.

Words: Your singing is great, and the lyrics, well I feel a cautionary, unadorned naturalistic outlook toward live's compromises. (Hope that's vague enough to pass as pseudo valid.)

Latter-half instrumental: The layered leads, especially I genuinely dig your layered leads. Especially that trilly little low-register hammer-on panned predominantly left. I'm seldom one to want to trance-out, but THIS is different; I could listen to that instrumental section for another 10 minutes. Thank you for the download, bruv.

Very Effective
Nice mood piece.

Excellent mic effect for setting the tone along with the tasty & woody sound of your guitar.

That crisp plucking against the almost harpsichordian organ sound, certainly a nice treat for the ears as we slip into the mirky depths.

Drifting through this world
I was caught up in the intoxicating simplicity of the music and dark hushed tone of your singing, and just floated along, drawn into heavy introspection by the lyrics. I actually did not find the second section to be "starkly contrasting/positive", but instead it seemed to simply reinforce and add energy to the dark ride, fitting perfectly and seamlessly. Perhaps looking back down on the music and my lifeless body in the tub, my only thought is that it ended too soon. ;-)

We are not worthy.

Classy work Julian and very impressive.

Playing is excellent (even for a guy who professes he can't play)and that end section is very clever and works beautifully. I see the Garrison is indeed a very good guitar.

Great atmosheric production
on your vocals - really good. Excellent contrast against the clean guitar sound. If it weren't for music like this I might have slashed my wrists a long time ago. Just kidding - but I'm sure you understand what I mean. Very interesting transition and closing compositional choices.

I did not
see anything to slash my wrist to, but more of a beautifully painted picture, very well performed and arranged. Great lyrics, very poetic, gives a good story between the lines as well. The vocals are very well done, I totally like the effect you're using - wouldn't work for everything, but for this song it does. The hints of Bossa Nova is brilliant as they take into a different scene - the accordion (?), works very well at building the last dramatic conclusion. Very well done. Thank you!

a minor masterpiece
Minor key that is. Another brilliant downbeat bomb from the master of melancholy! Excellent - lyrics and music in perfect harmony. Reminded me a little of Nick Drake too - is he an inspiration?

I like the instrumental "outro"!
To me, the two pieces aren't a stark contrast to each other. The dreamy and contemplative mood remains even after the instrumental section picks up the pace, at least for me. Very nicely established emotional tone and feel!

Navel gazing
It's being so cheerful keeps us going!!
the muse comes at different times and in many different ways, god knows I've done plenty of navel gazing. Vey delicate playing and nice harmonies. Really liked the instrumental section, maybe it shouldn't have all been lumped at the end? Just a thought. Mark

Very different
for me and enjoyable because of it being so...definitely a song of two halves, a slightly disillusioned and broken spirited song in the first but picking up after half-time into a more positive and perky song ..moving the notes into clear spaces and looking for opportunities to progress toward the finale with a resounding....GOAL.....sorry sorry not goal...crescendo.....I am going to have a lie down now......Jarvoid

Find the beginning quite chilled, doesn't pull me down at all. Like how you treat your voice and the development of the guitar riff is subtle and mesmerizing. Reminds of Eric Wollo's soundscapes. Very original sound and feel.
The ending with the synth lead left me a little bit unsatisfied - I would have liked to have more of a musical arch with the vocals coming back after the buildup - I could even hear a simple string arrangement come in towards the end.
Anyways, another excellent post. Continue to be impressed!

Fab poetic lyrics, stream of consciousness down a river Styx. Really liked the structure, the layering toward the end, until the non-guitar sound came in; consider a version with a an acoustic solo instead?

Oooh I like this!

Really good guitar playing and the vocals really intensify the dark mood you promised. The outro is really well designed. That's a nice instrumental riff, but I don't think it's a departure from the rest of the tune.

I think this is my favorite song of yours.

Gentle, rhythmical guitar is mesmerising, as is the eerie vocal. Rich imagery in the lyrics. There is an urgency to the gradually developing guitar solo. Great work!
