Snake Baked a Hoecake / Martha Campbell

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
The first part is a song I remember from childhood that I always liked... it stuck with me.
The second part is a fiddle tune, I think (not sure) that it might be from Kentucky.
In a rash moment I put out an appeal for a spoons part, because I tried playing spoons on it and I sounded terrible.
However, I decided to just post it as is, sans spoons for now.
I do want to do a fiddle tune with spoons in the future, though.

Lyrics
the snake baked a hoecake, and set the frog to watch it
the frog fell a-dozing, the lizard came and took it.
"Bring back my hoecake, you long-tailed nanny-o."

Rippin' it on banjo!
Again the bluegrass feel to this is spot on! Terrific song. There's not much to say except you are a terrific musician! The fiddle and banjo, guitar etc. You are truly talented. Rock on! (by the way, I'm sure parents would rather their children listen to this than my stuff) :)

very good once more
Spoons would be nice, triangle also would work. The one thing that doesn't totally work for me is the double tracked vocal. Sort of doesn't fit with the old-time vibe, but rules are made to be broken, I guess. Maybe I just need to have a more open mind!

I had the same thought, but for some reason I just decided to keep it double tracked.... I guess I wanted to have it soft (to try the antithesis of the bellowing on my last post) but not completely weak-sounding.
I'll keep trying different things to see what works...
thanks for the listen and the thoughtful comment!

Nice picking and fiddling
Seriously, I live about 50 miles from Dollywood and this is classic "grass".
You have great skills my my friend.
Spoons work.

Dollywood
I bet that would be an interesting place to visit. I love Dolly Parton's duets with Porter Wagoner.
Glad you liked!

I love your eclectic taste in music bro!
Very cool banjo-fiddle piece! Lot'sa LILT!

This time your vocals were right where they needed to be for a tune like this. BRAVO!

Be well my friend!

Lilt
I actually usually play Irish music so I hope the lilt is not too un-idiomatic for American stuff....
however, I like playing it that way, so what the heck.
thanks for listening Mike!

you long tailed nanny-o
yeah man keep them coming. and keep the vox as is. the unique charm of these tunes is how you pair a contemporary indie vibe with the old timey sounds. i really like the last couple where you create a medley, cool choices too, bringing the spirit of the contemporary mashup to mountain music.

thnx
glad you liked! the song-followed-by-tune idea is basically stolen from irish traditional bands like Planxty, who used that to very good effect. Some english folkies like Martin Carthy do it too.

Folking hell!
This is fantastic seam of trad tunes you're mining here. Loving the banjo work and the fiddle is the icing on the cake - appeals to my true Irish heart. Another winner.

thanks paddy
glad it resonated with the Irishness... one of my favourite cultures and places (my wife is 2nd gen. Irish)!
Irish is the only kind of fiddling I actually know something about, so I should do some of that next....

Snake's Hoecake!
Love your trad/folk/roots side! Impressive how you create a really natural and organic feel multitracking with yourself--something I struggle with to little avail.

glad you liked it! I guarantee you would not have been complimentary on my spoons playing, if I had left it on LOL.
Your multitracked creations always sound darn good to me! Using all-acoustic real instruments, not too close to the mic, with no MIDI is probably responsible for organic feel on this one....

Medley
You just don't get enough medleys on MJ. Love the banjo. Played one the other day and it sounded like absolute garbage. This sounded really hip, if that makes sense. Tempie kind of explained it better.

thanks much Lennon714. don't give up on the banjo! everyone should play the banjo. and all other instruments should be destroyed. :)

Nice!
I love the dry authentic tone of the instruments, The change in feel to the fiddle tune is great. Would it be possible to sing the opening tune in that same uptempo feel at the end? I think it would frame the arrangement nicely. I also think your vocal deserves more prominence in the mix (turn it up). I would also like to hear just a bit more of your guitar. Maybe turn it up a little or move it to a vacant place in the stereo field. Try panning it out a bit to the left or right. With all that said, it's great as is!

Great feedback, I probably won't be revisiting this one but I keep all the feedback in mind for future efforts. I really appreciate it when people take the time to make suggestions for improving.... thanks for the listen!
