Description
Hi, folks, Roxylee here with another demo. Let me know what you think.
Harmony or no harmony? Is my voice too forward in the mix? Any
suggestions for a better EQ? etc. I am looking forward to the next mix
to hear the changes and additions. This is fun!

Roxylee
You must have suspected the things you asked about as being a problem in your mix. Yes, I believe your voice is too loud in the mix and I think the harmony could be panned closer to the lead vox to allow it to blend better. I like your song however and it will be a great addition to MJ's song list.

Thanks!
Yeh, I imported it to iTunes as sung and didn't feel like going back into GarageBand to change it, since it was just a demo. with the help of inputs like yours, this song will be tweaked to perfection by the final mix. :-)

I'm thinking...
...some sort of fiddle/whistle/recorder/mando combination in the instrumental bridge. What do you think?

Cheers,
Jim of Socorro

I like the vox harmonies
The guitar sound may need some high end. I don't know if you guys are going to re-record it, but some eq to brighten the guitar a little bit may help if not (remove mids?).
So nice of you letting us know and get involved in some way in your collab process.

Andy...
Would you like to put some mando in the backing track, too? That should brighten it up a bit.

Cheers,
Jim

Mando
That would be great!

For the instrumental break...
...maybe we should have Andy repeat the melody (or better yet, some variation of it) on pennywhistle or recorder and put some mando flourishes behind it, then I could harmonize with a low whistle and echo the chord tones with the fiddle behind all of that. This would give it a sort of combination Celtic/Southwestern sound, kind of like David Wilkie and Cowboy Celtic.

Whaddaya think?

Cheers,
Jim

yup
I'll need to go out to the shed to see what all I have out there.... like the direction of everything so far... The Southwestern feel and all.

And I almost forgot...
...This should make it easier for Roxy to balance her vocals with the instrumental break and give the whole piece some continuity.

Cheers,
Jim

Considering the genre
It's perfectly appropriate that your voice is complete intelligible in every syllable and that the guitar is back in the mix. It's not doing much. In fact, you could dispense with that guitar intermezzo: it just plays the chords without anything added. If you put a second guitar or a harmonica on top of it it would mean something, but right now I was wondering if maybe there was a verse supposed to go there that you haddn't written yet.

Lovely song, btw. Reminds me of a June Carter Cash album I have.

The guitar intermezzo...
...will not be left as-is. This is where the instrumental break is going in.

But thanks for the commentary. We are indeed going for a folk sound here, so hopefully we're on target there.

Cheers,
Jim

"Roxy has
a style familiar to Joan Baez. Like this folk style. Maybe with music like you can help bring back folk in the limelight of pop country cross over.

Terrific words and enjoy the guitar and bass! Thanks for sharing !

Your voice sounds well balanced to me given the genre
that said - I think the backing track could use a little more energy as opposed to volume. Might just be a matter of punching up the eg a bit. Or double tracking the music with different settings to add both depth and presence.
