Dodging Boulders on a Dark Highway.

A dark road can be a hazardous place - but this music isn't.
This is a work in progress and is still a pretty rough. This is what for me is a long piece, and I've been working since it was posted. It certainly needs tightening up and other modifications but I still wanted to share it with you. Any thoughts or input would be great.

I've reworked this one some and have what I consider is a better version here:

Where did you get that picture - it's great!
The jilting opening rhythm reminds me of Aaron Copland but you take it to a more intense place as you put your trademark 'Bowman Harmonies' into the theme. I thought the flute after 1:25 seems to sometimes get a little lost in the mix, and it's a nice counter to the rhythm in the strings. I thought the wood block was an interesting touch and it lends a western kind of setting to the piece to me. The new string melody/rhythm at 4:30 is a good evolution with the legato violins on top. Is that a sax I hear? I wonder if changing the key or chords in the syncopated rhythm would provide more of a development against the other elements you have layered in. What I do get from it is that 1) this is a long road, probably in the middle of nowhere 2) I am tense the whole time as to when the next surprise is going to jump out of the darkness 3) the rain reflecting any light on the road may be beautiful (legato strings) but there's no getting away from my predicament, and I have to keep moving forward.

You clearly put a lot of work into this one Charlie. I enjoyed it!

Best wishes,

thoughts on this Doug. As you suggested I definitely will play with varying the rhythm and you're right, lot's of work went in trying to get this to work and still more will to make it better.

It's hard to not focus on the picture at same-time you listen.
So for me the story is about a young innocent girl who walk in her own dream(s), crossing the road and almost be hit by the car, saved the last second of the drivers killer-instinct, she runaway and start dreaming away again like nothing happen, and she find her way home safe but wet.. Nice my friend.

The Rhythm Method
Once again, you are the absolute master of rhythm, but I agree with the guy above that a key change (or some other change) would add variety to the piece.

I gotta say that if ever any of your music deserved to be made into one of your videos, this is that piece. I just watched it in the iTunes visualizer, and even that looked good.

Know any animators?

Wish I did.
Thanks Keith. Never tried it with the iTunes visualizer but just did and it was pretty cool especially the classic version. Appreciate the comments Keith.

Highway on the Rocks
I like the dissonance that you introduce around the 2:00 mark. Also the repeating string motif is very intriguing and keeps the piece moving. Very well done.
