Rise Up, Cowboy

Description
Roxylee says she hasn't heard enough of me doing Folk songs. Well, I did this song a few years back. Let's dust it off and give it another spin. This song was inspired by Tom Berenger, star of the movie Rustler's Rhapsody.

By the way, I think Stan Rogers is great! I found a rare songbook for $2 at a thrift store last week: "Stan Rogers: Songs From Fogarty's Cove." It was published in 1983, a year after Stan tragically died in an airplane fire at age 33. Roxy and I have been praising his rich, resonant, seafaring voice for the past few days. I was first introduced to Stan and Garnet Rogers by Ed Hannifin.

And another tip of my hat to RT Cooper who taught me how to Travis pick. Here is his personal lesson to me, dated 1-27-2006:

Lyrics
Rise Up, Cowboy

Rise up, cowboy. Ride on! Rise up, cowboy. Ride on!
Rise up, cowboy. Ride on! Rise up, cowboy. Ride on!

One more round for the old leather hide.
Chaps a flapping in the warm prairie breeze.
Saddled with the weight, yet still wants to ride.
Won't give up the fight, won't bend to his knees.

Men, women, children hushed as he enters town.
Gonna fight the the bad guise, sing a song, beat the cheat.
He's getting off his high horse, 'bout to get down.
What new lick or trick will make our life complete?

Rise up, cowboy. Ride on!
Get a bead on bounty with your brand new scope.
Rise up, cowboy. Ride on!
Bring on home the bacon at the end of your taut rope.

There's power in the sage roots that he's eaten.
There's might in poems he writes and songs he plays.
With virtue in his heart, he can't be beaten.
With confidence, he conquers night and day.

No one else can catch the wind with such a flair.
No one else can send the rustlers out to graze.
Heels digging deep into the gut of his gray mare,
He rides the clouds in most peculiar ways.

Rise up, cowboy. Ride on! Rise up, cowboy. Ride on!
Rise up, cowboy. Ride on! Rise up, cowboy. Ride on!

[break]

A big fat sack of lofty tales and passing hours
lies buried in a hole beneath the current waves.
Stories of bone and flesh and blood, so sweet and sour,
wooliness and holiness expressed in many ways.

Rise up, cowboy. Ride on!
Your wanderlust will take you to the edge of whim.
Rise up, cowboy. Ride on!
Do some good before your wick is trimmed.

Rise up, cowboy. Ride on! Rise up, cowboy. Ride on!
Rise up, cowboy. Ride on! Rise up, cowboy. Ride on!

Travis pick
I need to learn that! This is a great song man. Cool guitar work and very cool vocals; your vocals have just a hint of the man in black (one of my favorite singers of all time).

Fast Eddie!
I could sing more like the MIB if I wanted. But I decided about 4 years ago to be my own Man in the Red.

I could send you a chord map, if interested. I'd love to hear your rendering of this.

Oh...
I realize now you are talking about learning Travis picking. Let me see if I can find that lesson MP3 by RT Cooper.

Soundtrack

That's a nice compliment -- that it sounds like soundtrack material. I was hoping you'd say that! Thanks.

Great picking style
and thanks for the folk song! I like your energy in the main vocals and your backup harmonies a lot. Surely you must have a $2 cowboy hat to go with all the other treasures you keep managing to find in your travels, such as the rare $2 Stan Rogers songbook. ;-)

Hat check

Rox: Yes, I have a cowboy hat but have been forbidden to wear it on the home range. Stan was all about vocal energy. He didn't just carry the tune, he carried the story.

Hi, GandC
Believe it or not, during the summer after my freshman year of college (1971), I traveled south to the western part of Virginia to do volunteer "mission" work for a month in Lebanon, VA, building prefab houses. I stayed in a fancy colonial mansion-hotel in St. Paul, VA. Or was it the other way around? It's been so long! I remember best a cool rope-swing, tethered to a huge tree about three stories high, that swung you from the high bank into the river. What a splashdown! During my stay in the mansion, I chewed tobacco for the first (and last) time. I also remember watching an Apollo moon landing on the B&W TV in the lobby. It may have been the second U.S. moonwalk.

One of your best bro!
I remember this one well. Nice to pay it a revisit. Good choice!

Be will!

Be will
I know you usually say "be well" but I like "be will." That's a powerfully deep imperative.
