Arctic Tern

Description
These astonishing little birds travel from the North Pole to the South and back, on their migration route, a grand total of over 44,000 miles each year. The ultimate ocean wanderers! This short ambient tune is my homage to these amazing pelagic travellers.

There are ten tracks altogether in this tune, a combination of Albino 3 and Zebra 2 soft synths. I've also used some Arctic Tern samples. Hope you might like it.

Oh, I'm sure
I'll like it Dave....I've seen about these birds on a TV documentary at some time.... and this picture you've painted is perfect for that kind of media. There's such 'space' and vastness in the sound and then the first bell sound reminded me of those Buoys that bob about on the depths .... then that swooping chattering came... perfect, but I wanted it to go on longer LOL, regards M

Thanks Mo
Yes, I tried to get the "buoy" sound so I'm glad you noticed. These birds tend to hog the coast, so you can often see them. Quite a lot breed in the North. I've actually been mobbed by the little buggers in Wales. Their beaks are sharp and they are quite fearless. Considering their epic journey, you're quite right. I should have made this one longer!

Nice of you to stop by, cheers Mo!

Pelagic!
Not often that I improve my vocabulary by listening to music. Thanks. Well, Dave, this has one of the most beautiful openings ... ever. That runs to the 2:00 minute mark. Then a subtle change. The horizon expands, and we are high above the ocean, sensing our direction, with ever-so-slight adjustments to our course, subconsciously wanting permanence and familiarity, but patient in our journey, living in the moment. One of your best, sir.

Thank you
I was pelagic myself in a past life. I really like the sea and all that live on and in it. I'm lucky enough to live a stone's throw from it. Your imagery is quite wonderful, I must say. I may use it for sleeve notes!

Thanks again Ex.

Lovely Dave
If I was Drak I'd say something about a tern for the better, but instead I'll say something about the airiness of this and the definite feeling of flight. Nicely done. D/l'd thanks.

Thank you
I'm glad you mentioned the airiness. It was something I'd tried to get into this one. It wasn't easy, I can tell you, getting those synth voices to blend. They can be very unruly. I had to mix down a few individual tracks and insert them as aifs into Logic because they kept morphing. It was all a bit trial and error and I'm not completely happy. I got a bit fed up though and selected the mixes that were nearest to what I wanted. [I had about 20 of them! Very time consuming.]

Thanks again.

One good tern ......
You do this stuff so brilliantly well - this is another terrific addition to your collection. I'm surprised doco makers haven't swooped and grabbed a few of these. A friend writes "relaxation music" for his wife who is a psychologist specialising in stress management - has to be a market there.
Really good piece of music Dave.
Cheers,
Neil

I think some Arctic Terns may pass by your way in [your] Summer, so you might see them! Yes, I'd love to make some music for documentaries, but maybe TV companies have their own writers. Funny though, you often hear recognisable loops on TV shows!

Anyway, thanks for dropping by.

I'm aloft!
Soaring, waves of coolness, broad expanses of sky, the wind whistling. This is a very clean orchestration with tons of space to breathe. Nice touch on the evolution with sprinkles of the birdsong here and there.

Top drawer ambient Dave. Love it. Thanks for the tune!

Hi Dave.....
I'm a bit late here with my thoughts.

I like these pieces that you are putting together with this theme. The bird noises added to the Ambient nature of the piece and so seemed fine by me.

Your choice of instruments/sounds works well, as always.

I look forward to more tracks in the same vein.

Take care.

Paul

short trip
Beautiful piece - love the line in the lower register in accent to the rest. Hard to convey 44,000 mi in 3.5 minutes, but perhaps to convey departure or arrival...

Nice

Soaring shy high
Beats me where the little things get their motivation for that sort of trek. Maybe they play your music on their ipod nanos.

Lovely stuff!

Haha!
Shuffles I think. Nano's would be rather too big.

I was watching some terns fishing earlier today. Very cool! But they were Sandwich, and not Arctic terns. So I was reliably informed by a birdwatcher with a long telescope.

Thanks Vic.

random walk in the park
It is interesting to follow the unusual bass pattern here, it commands my attention, warm and rich. The synths sparkle off the water's surface. The repeated bird call is a nice tern at the beginning and end. Although it is a bit short, perhaps you could extend this and break it into a beginning, middle and end, so it is ternary? Very nice choices of voices, nice mix, and peaceful.
