Description

I wrote this song recently . . . 2008 . . . and now here on MJ, I have dusted it off adding an 'Ah' keyboard sound. I used the fine feature on 'Cool Edit Pro' to taper-in and taper-out the VCA volume levels. It would be fun to do it in a live situation with someone from M singing harmony . . . hint hint hint . . .

I recorded the vocals and guitar simultaneously.
- my results are far better this way, and less disjointed when recording acoustic guitar and vocal songs - it is more in sync. this way - and the vocals and guitar merge. - the wood vibrations are felt though my body as I am playing it and it is like an ongoing progressive inspirational 'humming' thus thereby prompting my vocal inflections - the guitar finger picking is simple but maybe a little different - and there is no chorus present - I tried it with a refrain - but it broke-up the existing mesmerizing effect too much - I could stack up harmonies of my own voice and redo it, as I have before, but another person's vocal sonorities are always fun to experience . . . although I sometimes alter and diversify my vocal style and delivery to fit the environment - as many musicians here can also do - I'm sure - - -(I now have some other 'takes' with my vocal harmony - maybe I'll post the new version too) . . . but this 'raw' version seemed more appropriate without the building-on)
This is a Stagg cedar Jumbo here. I got it from 'Music-go-Round' in St. Paul, MN.

Tuning ~ first I got a slightly thicker low A-string and
tuned it down to G. Then I brought the strong pitches all up a half step
arriving at F, Ab, Eb, Ab, C, F.
I'm sure it's been done before by many other.
The song is Ab.

A micrometer from builders square really helps with something like this.
Also it helps with my piano string measurements.

Lyrics

I say everything's unfair - I am suspended in the air
no zero-gravity out there - I'll go sailing out somewhere
I say everthing's unfair - extend the finger if you dare
as if though I even care - it won't get you anywhere

close the shades I'm in the bare - paparazzi likes to stare
my explanation's on the chair - that's why I dove into the air

I find you're rocking in my chair - you told me I better beware
you look through me like I'm not there - there is no sunlight in your hair
you ripped through me like a freight train
your voice still calls out my name
I'm too weary to pretend - I'll go stumble once again

Is the weather fine up here - way beyond the stratosphere
I'm freeing cold and filled with fear - I need oxygen and beer

you pretend to be prepared - to be discovered out somewhere
upon your shoulder is no care - I can't find you anywhere

everybody's so unkind - we are what bloodhounds left behind
the decision was all mine - to send me to another time

I say nothing is even fair - go out sailing somewhere
don't just look at me and stare - I might dive into the air
there's no gravity out there - may as well just jump into the air
there's no gravity out there - I am suspended in - the air

Nice Song
I love the pitch bending synth pad. Very intimate recording. There's a nice Don McLean thing in your vocal performance.

this
good to hear from you . . .
This whole-step slide-up is done with the pitch bender's
default setting - manually held - starting below the designated triad, and perfect fourth interval tones - and releasing it slowly - sliding up - and is one of the ROM voices of this Ensoniq ZR76 Keyboard.
"Ahhs" - setting -

Very nice song with glimpses of both Harry Chapin & Don McLean. You are right, some harmonies would be great. Thanks for sharing. / Mike

Hi - I have a version with a vocal part feathered - basically a third
above the original vocal. The wide-spaced phrasing in this number
leaves possibilities of interwoven trace or mimic voices in between -
- such as ann and nancy in 'Heart's' "These Dreams"

I like the nonstandard tuning, don't think I've heard anything like that picked line especially the top notes. Your sincere vocals are an interesting contrast to the darker undertones of the lyric. This is about the dude that filled a bunch of helium ballons up, tied them to a lawn chair and was discovered by a pilot at 20000 feet right?

Delicate work...
Very fragile song, nicely performed, great voice. I too like the portamento synth pads here, although since it is a stand-out embellishment, you were right on the edge of using it too much throughout the song, possibly. Nice allusions in the lyrics. You may wish to seek out a kindred folk-spirit here on Macjams, "Roxylee", and I'll point her at your work too. Welcome to Macjams, really well done!

I like that portamento effect on the keyboard--I think you kept it this side of tasteful.

I also find that I often do better at both "instruments" if I do guitar-vocal or piano-vocal simultaneously.

If not a refrain, I could definitely hear harmonies building progressively across this song... But I like the "mesmerizing" effect here, in your words.

Speaking of a song squeaky clean!
8, you have this way of picking around.
Wording neither scares nor scars. Rather, your context in a subtle manner, invites me to entertain myself out and about a similar scenario.
