Into the Coma

Based on a personal experience... slipping off into a coma when things went wrong during a 12 hour surgery on my spine.

This was the very first song I ever did on midi, a few years ago. My wife had bought me a yamaha midi keyboard for "mental health" to cheer me up.

I have yet to write anything about coming out of the coma as it was horrible, painful, terrifying, violent.

Sorry
Reading your description made me sad, I sure hope you have fully recovered since then. Beautiful composition...

Description made me sad
Ravens- I am sorry- I didn't intend to make anyone sad, I was trying to explain where this song, which is so totally different than anything I have ever written, came from.

I made it thru it all (as the saying goes "I am here to be able to complain about it").

I can walk, I have no serious pain, and I am grateful to be alive.

.... and the band played on....

Coma
Greg, this is fabulous! what a backstory though (no pun intended) - do you have some kind of memory of "slipping away" into the coma, or of being in that state, at all? the Yamaha was a great idea on your wife's part - this is beautiful, serene, peaceful music - very well done, nicely produced - thanks!

what a backstory
I love that pun!

It was confusing. I remember being put to sleep for the surgery- that was a gentle "fade to black". Then "nothingness" - time stood still. Then a sensation of floating or something I can't put into words - peaceful but not dreaming - and suddenly I am being choked (breathing tube), stabbed, being torn apart, confusion, etc as I came out of the coma (unexpectedly).

Odd thing was, my personality changed after that. Short term memory was messed up but I could vividly remember things that had happened 30 to 50 years ago... hence most of the tunes I've posted here- old songs and music styles from the 60's and 70's that were long forgotten suddenly come back.

I could probably go on for hours- but I won't. I did drown about 40 years ago, and before they brought me back I did see the "bright light"... but that's a story for another time.

Thanks for listening, and your gracious comments.

Fascinating experiences
In a way, I would say you're fortunate to have had the experiences in your description and comments. Not the loss of memory part. I cannot imagine.

Beautiful and inspiring music.

I know it's a MacJams cliche, but this time it actually means something -- thanks for sharing.

Fascinating experiences
Thanks.
I have been told that there is a reason that I am still alive after what I've been through - that I still have a mission to finish in this life. I now have the philosophy that "Each Day is Another Chapter in the Book of My Life" You don't what is going to happen until you read (or live) it.

Regarding the memory loss... I don't know what it I've forgotten so I don't think it was worth remembering. Also, many of the things I remember from long ago are much more vivid.

In simple terms...

Yesterday is history.
Tomorrow is a mystery.
Today is a gift...
That's why we call is "The Present".

Thanks for listening.

Coma
What an awesome chord progression, with a feeling of tranquility. A near perfect blend of sounds.
Hope all is well too . . .

wish I could download
I thought I had set this as downloadable, but maybe I didn't (I blame any errors such as this on "oldtimers") - in any case, I have updated the song so please- download away!

Also, thank you all for such kind comments. The odd thing about this song is that it took 2 hours from start to finish to compose, record, edit, and mix to stereo. I just kinda closed my eyes and let my fingers do the work.

Not Coma inducing...
Well, I have been told at one time or another that my music would put someone to sleep but hopefully not into a coma. Thanks for listening.

It sounds to me
that you have had some experiences beyond the ordinary that gave you a different perspective. I think a coma is like a sleep of long duration. Rarely does the unconscious mind have so much time to weave its reality, its other world. This was serene and calming and encouraging. Thank you. :)

some experiences beyond ordinary
I feel very fortunate to still be here. I think this music came from that instant where I went from being sedated during surgery to coding, and my soul or life force was deciding between going into the coma or death. Both were options when everything went wrong.

Don't know. In the coma there was nothing, no dreams, no passage of time, but when I did wake up, my personality had changed. Memories had changed. This was the very first song I wrote when I got the keyboard. Hadn't played one for 35 years before that. Now I remember every song I played in bands 40 years ago!

Oops- I'm rambling. THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENTS, and for listening!

Thanks! What they could fix, has been fixed. What they could not... maybe the theme of a new song!?
Music is incredible therapy. I tell everyone that it is my Mental Health medicine.

Thank you all for the comments. Yep, if you listen to the lyrics of most of my songs, you can hear various events of my life (for example, "She Opened Her Arms" and "Boones Farm"). As they say, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger!
Thanks for listening and commenting.

Oh my goodness!
Whoa...this is all midi??? It sounds live...perhaps I'm just green, but it's great. Wish my keyboard did tricks like this. This is a beautiful piece by the way. I really like the theme. This should be in a movie!
GregDz said 3250 days ago (August 22nd, 2010)
Midi- yep
Everything I do is midi based. Took an hour or two to write and record, then weeks to tweek the instruments to sound "real"... or to sound "vintage".

Most of my professional life evolved around sound, acoustics and music, so I am almost "anal" about my instruments. I can listen to many recordings and tell you all about the room the instruments and vocals were recorded in... size, shape, hard or soft surfaces.

Thank you for the gracious comments. Like you, my music comes from my life (or in this case near-death) experiences.

You piece is very beautiful. Also, I would listen to you talk about your experiences as long as you cared to share. You are a gift and I love what you said about living...yesterday, tomorrow, today! Words to live by! Have you considered writing a book? You should.

Carrie- Thank you for your gracious comments. Don't ask me to tell you everything- I can go on for hours!

Rather than writing a book, I am writing my story with music.
