Description
FRIENDS who already reviewed "The Pianist" before (on my page or on Char's) :

This is just a housekeeping post. I disabled the previous version of this song with my voice and lyrics and I'm posting now with Char's ...

For MacJammers who newly visit this one, welcome !

This song is a dedication to two great musicians, Richard Wright (Pink Floyd) and Eric Woolfson (The Alan Parsons Project). Their work, their inspiration has marked an important part of my view to the music while their songs kept me company for years. This song is about the memory they left and expresses regrets for not being able to hear their inspiration again.

In addition to their musical contribution, they are also known for being silent and discreet artists, letting people talk more about their work than themselves.

I initially created this song and Char (http://www.macjams.com/artist/Char) created the lyrics for this version taking my input for the thema. She also composed the vocal lines for this song. My sincere thanks to Char, for this pleasant collaboration, and for bringing her talent in !

A shorter version of this song is posted on Char's page.

Many thanks for your support and for the visitors having a first listen, I hope you enjoy !

Lyrics
The Pianist

Music notes dance in my brain
I become seventeen again
Because those days, I still recall
I know those times last, after all
Rainy day visions, in my sight
Are painted by black notes on white
Notes, on pages, like drops of rain
I'm young again, with each refrain
Your inspiration-it now seems
Built secret places in my dreams
>
Long hours through my day and night
You helped me put my wrong to right
Have you no more left to impart;
And no more songs to touch my heart?
I've no power to make you stay
So, our story must end this way
Years go by; we all grow old
But new stories must still be told
It's your sad passing that's my plight
The pianist, he won't play tonight
>
Depending on you may be wrong
Though I have done that for so long
It was your music brought you fame
And your person, I still acclaim
I'm one of many at the gate
Standing alone is what I hate
Colored leaves scatter on the ground
Cold September reigns all around
Mem'ries of you- they fade, I fear
None of your music do I hear

Dani I appreciate so much your support,
and I know what a great musician you are yourself. This makes me feel so privileged having your interest and appreciation to this. Char's version is indeed the same, but I wanted to suggest to have it shortened there so that it still captures interest (having to listen to 16 minutes may be daunting) and also to give a good proportion and be fair about (but still not enough) to her vocal work over the duration of the song. Her help made a real change, and I'm so glad she accepted generously to work this out. I am certainly looking for a next one now, to work with Char, realizing one of her songs.

Epic
Cool idea for this song. I guess my main gripe is that the elements don't blend acoustically. That orchestra sounds like I'm in a big hall, but then a guitar comes in through an amp that's right next to my ear. The vocal section again has a completely different ambience.

Always a pleasure to hear Char, and your guitar accompaniment is subtle and supportive.

Fully agree !
You're right Vic, indeed, this one was made quite long ago using tools that were rather "basic". Though I'm surprised how the orchestral VST's were actually quite good (better then some newer ones I was using lately). Back in time I also had quite a big lack of experience on mixing down and deciding how things should sound (not that I'm much further away today) but hopefully with time I'll figure that out better.

EPIC
I love how the guitar solo near the end just sits in the back of the mix with a lot of fuzz and reverb....and then the song gets really dramatic around 12:15 like some of the stuff Dream Theater did on six degrees of inner turbulence.

I'd say also it reminds me a bit of Johns playing playing from Mahavishnu Orchestra....but what do i know I am just a youngin'

Great collab -
really impressive work from both of you. I like the sound quality and the dramatic pace and orchestration - feels timeless. Timelessness is also a quality that I equate with Char's voice - wonderful as ever here.

A Passionate Song
This is a touching song with well-crafted lyrics, passionate vocal, excellent arrangement & orchestration. Parsons/Woolfson is my favourite act of all time and I'm still listening to their work as of today. I like Woolfson's melodies & singing. "Freudiana" is indeed a great album from him. Yes, we'll miss him.

All the best / Mike

second listen the best
Love this and the use of use of electric in this... Is it Classical or is it Progressive Rock like you have stated in the genre choice. The piano at times is sparse and elegant. The dedication that you have made to Wright and Parsons is a good choice for inspiration and works well. A flower in the desert. Char's voice is perfect for this.

Incredible
This song was a journey! Char's vocals are stunning--in a strange way, I'd say they remind me of a very understated, silky Gwen Stefani. The arrangement morphs and changes seamlessly too. I hope I am able to create music like this one day . . . . oh, and it is a spot-on tribute. It really, really recalls Pink Floyd, and I am a HUGE fan of all things Pink Floyd.
