Twisted Keys w/Yordbear

Well this is exciting. My first ever collab. Steve had the simple two part guitar riff, I found part of the lyrics that I’d written on the back of a student notebook from 1981. Worked on the finishing the lyrics and song layout then sent it over to my new mate Yordbear. When the first mix came back I couldn’t believe it! So we tinkered about for a few weeks and here’s the final mix. We are both dead excited on releasing our “first born child” out into the world, hope you like her (and she sounds especially good on headphones!)

As for the song the lyrics they were mostly a reflection on what I could see/hear looking out my student flat back window at the time. The “wide mouth girl next door” played “Keep on Loving You” by REO Speedwagon over and over again!!

My huge thanks to Aron for all his time and effort on this, having a different perspective, different instruments and different skills involved in a project has been so refreshing.

Twisted keys

Looking through my window
Endless back yards
Washing on lines forever
Drying in the sun

Local cats fighting
Cats that don’t belong

The bald old man
He’s always there
Out on a weekend
Propagating plants
In his conservatory world

Twisted keys
And August Sundays
Time to think
And Time to Kill

The wide mouth girl next door
Is talking to her mother
And the rest of the world

If she plays that song again
I swear I’ll take this wall down

Twisted keys
And August Sundays
Time to think
And Time to Kill

Bin bags torn open again
Foxes, cats and rats
Steam rises from the iron rails
The entrance to my flat

Oh come on, "Keep on Loving You" wasn't that bad!

Love the chorus. Nice use of orchestration behind a solid guitar accompaniment. This has a cool REM quality. The lower register vocals definitely have a Michael Stipe quality. Nice collaboration.

Nice job fellahs,
The keys give this a Moody Blues feel, and the multi vocalising reinforce the effect.
The lyrics conjure up the typical old streets of our nation, terraced houses marching in rows with long narrow gardens stretching on endlessly behind them....you can almost smell Stanton and Staveley...and where did that great picture come from ...good job as I said.

The strings/french horn in back of the guitar feels like the Moody Blues to me. Cool slice of life lyrics. Nice vocs and production.

wrapped in warmth
There's something like a warm blanket that this music envelops me in, nice. The french horn does it I think, and that along with the tremolo strings gives it a bit of an Alan Parsons feel (there, NOT a Moody Blues reference for you :) )

Love the lyrical painting, great singing and orchestration & playing.

well folks...
you have a keeper. what a great blend of styles. a bit of the moodies i think (for me a good thing) but way updated and really like the vocal treatment here..well done indeed. good stuff...deep bows...by the way the bongos (?) at about 3:00 were a surprise ...but also quiet a rush ..lol. cool

You're setting the bar very high with such a crisp and well-done production! It sounds absolutely yummy and professional. It sounds almost like a Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd song like "Arnold Layne," know what I mean? Poppy, yet deep and ethereal. I like it!

What a great picture to acompany the song! ..AND what an absolute joy of a song to work on. The lyrics really set off great images of the past and makes me wanna be able to hop into a time machine/or even marks photo album from the 80's to explore what was going on at the time!..Thanks for all the great comments..I'm not entirely sure who the moody blues are, but im certainly gonna be on the hunt for a tape to play.i'll be down the carboot tonight! hahaha...*Y*

I think
you guys did really well together. Aron added the orchestration, yes? It is at once a sound reminiscent of the 80's but also has a contemporary feel. Beautiful singing and playing. Very special. :)

Moodies meet Neil Young
Backing is most impressive as a support for the honest straight up vocals. Great song guys. Powerful collab full of synergy.

This is...
... excellent on so many levels; songwriting, performance, recording, mixing, and arrangement. Everything sounds in place and well blend in! I'm taken by the orchestration; a very smart, necessary, and refreshing addition.

Very nice
Good song, good arrangement, good performances.

I think the guitar overpowers the vocals slightly. I would filter some of those booming low-mid frequencies from the vocal and go easy of effects like reverb, then you can pull it a bit more in front of the guitar. Also roll a bit of low-mid off that guitar.
