Description
I should point out right off the bat that my contributions to this one are limited to the drums, tambourine and accordion. I realize it's therefore kind of a misnomer to post the song as mine, but I hope everyone will let me slide. While the real author has joined MacJams, life hasn't allowed him the time to get involved here.
The song belongs to a good friend of mine (and former bandmate), Stephen Bloodsworth (aka sbloodsworth here). The song is under copyright (2009). In my humble opinion, the guy is just an amazing singer and songwriter. He's the guy who got me started down the digital drum path I am now on. My first song post here at MacJams ("My Head") was also a collab with him, as was the second ("Piece of Heaven"). In the year to the day since that second post, Steve has moved from Nashville back to my area near DC. He dropped me a line three months back and we've been meaning to hang out again since.
He first sent me the MP3 mid-June '09. We passed it back and forth for a month until it sounded decent, then I sent him the raw drum tracks as if I'd mic'ed up a real drumset - giving him the ultimate in control.
Like all of the songs we've worked on together, he sent me an MP3 of the song with everything recorded but drums. I feel everything was recorded and balanced perfectly. All that was left for me was to throw a simple rhythm on top and avoid getting in the way of the song.
He said it would be okay for me to post my mix here, but I never got around to it. My impetus to finally get this one together and posted was to try out a free demo of Ozone 4 (with a nod to Neil Porter for putting that bug in my brain back in January '09). I used a preset ("Gentle Tube" 3-band master) that I tuned ever-so-slightly. I am super-impressed with the program and highly recommend trying out the demo. I plan to delve into it and actually gain some understanding of how sound works in the coming months.
I hope that Steve will take a look at this page and become more active here!

Lyrics
Well I, if I could go back today
I would surely go and turn around
Everything I had to say
Dig out of the lost and found
Everything that made you go away
Everything that shook me to the ground
I'd take it back and hope you'd stay
And pick me up and turn my life around
Anything I have to do
Whistle like a bluebird's song
I'd put you up a rainbow too
I can make a river run
Underneath a desert sun
Anything I have to do
To get back in the grace of you
Well gather up my broken pieces
Glue me to your soul
Cause I am only breaking further
And I want to be whole
Well I, anything I have to do
Whistle like a bluebird's song
I'd put you up a rainbow too
I can make a river run
Underneath a desert sun
Anything I have to do
To get back in the grace of you
So gather up my broken pieces
Glue me to your soul
Cause I am only breaking further
And I want to be whole
I wish I could make you see
Life alone is killing me
Well I, anything I have to do
To get back in the grace of you
I would surely go and turn around
Everything I had to say
Dig out of the lost and found
Everything that made you go away
Everything that shook me to the ground
I'd take it back and hope you'd stay
And pick me up and turn my life around
Anything I have to do
Whistle like a bluebird's song
I'd put you up a rainbow too

Underneath a desert sun

Well gather up my broken pieces

You sure are a man of many talents Mike.
I really like Steve's song and both your performances here. I'm glad you decided to get onto Ozone - it makes a huge difference to a mix.
This is a lovely tune - love the harmonies Steve. classy tempo change at the end Mike.
Not much more I can say - love it!
Cheers from Oz,
Neil
