Oasis In Your Palm (mix2)

Get Flash to see this player.

Please note my (hopefully) final mix of this tune here: Oasis On The Rocks.

This is the first remaster of a song I posted last week: Oasis In Your Palm v1. I tried to make this mix warmer, boost the guitar solos slightly, moderate the sax level while making it sound slightly more alive. Let me know if its a subtle improvement. (In headphones, the mix is balanced, maybe even favoring the piano, due to stereo field clarity. On small laptop speakers, the sax dominates and bass is almost not there. In studio speakers, its sounds just the way I want it to. So hard to find the right mix.)

This is the first in a series of instrumentals I've been working on with saxophonist Woody Mankowski. I will be posting several more, in the jazz-bop genre as well as jazz funk. If it works out, we may branch out into other music beds I've had laying around in other genres too.

This song has kind of a desert feel, yet also is a good cocktail song. We can all carry an oasis in the palm of our hand, no matter what the desert around us can do... don't you think? Also, would "Oasis On The Rocks" be a better title?

Drums: Dane Richeson
Bass: Arthur Kell
Guitar: Elliot Friedman

Project 2010 with Woody Mankowski (so far):
Seafood Gumbo Bop
Oasis On The Rocks
Saddle Shoe Sally

Vocal variations of this series:
Seafood Gumbo w/ AngelaHope

Older collab with Woody:
River Runs Through Me

If you haven't heard much of my jazz stuff, please check out all the draft mixes that ended up on the album RAIN BATHER. Maybe start with I Wanna Fly. Woody also plays on most of those songs.

Very Nice____
I had this playing in my office at work and the mix sounded good as/or better than the radio stations I listen to. Great job.

Enjoyed - Thanks for sharing,

I thought the last mix was pretty much
perfect through my stereo system. This one is slightly different and good too. The sax sounds louder to me on this one though. Not sure why. I think the last mix is slightly better to my ear. Maybe the guitar can go up a tad (1 db) on the last mix. maybe just a hair of reverb on the sax. Those are very tiny nit picks though. I think v1 is radio ready as it is. A matter of taste though. Great effort!

Sounds about perfect in my headphones. I'd have to go back to the other mix to compare, but it does seem that the guitar level is improved. Personally, I prefer "In Your Palm" to "On The Rocks", but they are both fitting. Again, superfabulous playing by all!

The mix sounds very good to me this time. The sax is alive yet not as overpowering to the instruments.

This is hot Tobin!

Very cool tuff and definitely worth a second go around.

Live and natural.
That tempo gets the blood flowing, gotta love the walk of that bass. It's all sounds clear as a bell, and for me, the guitar soloing is a real treat and stands-out but blends just fine for my taste. Feels very alive, as if I get to watch this from live in a large room or small club with just the right touch of what sounds like natural reverb. Love it, T.M.

bass is subtle

...is so tough...'specially when you add more instruments. This sounds incredible on my phones. Everything's so alive 'n kickin'. Really, Tobin. GREAT mix! Love the tune, too. Pro players. Great stuff.

I always listen through headphones, and this sounds excellent through them. I'll listen on my speakers later on, but so far I dig what I'm hearing!

...on the rocks? - I like that title. Everything sounds great. Having not heard the original post, to me the guitar and piano solos seem a bit set back compared to the sax. I am listening on my computer monitors - interesting how putting the headphones on makes a big difference. Just like you say, everything sounds more balanced in the cans. Enjoyable to listen to regardless of the listening medium, to be sure. I am glad I found this version - thanks!

Great Jazz piece Tobin.
The Sax is fantastic, but a bit loud compared to the other lead instruments, the Piano and Guitar. Also, the Drums on this have a little reverb sheen that seems to be mostly missing on the other instruments. The Sax is almost dry as is the guitar and piano. It's like they are playing in different spaces.

The music is outstanding, but the mix needs a little attention to smooth it out and get them all playing on the same stage.

Love the piece though, it is thoroughly enjoyable.

By the way,
I do like the title "Oasis On The Rocks" better. More fitting for the Jazz club atmosphere.
