Description
Here's a great standard in the public domain written by DeSylvia, Brown, and Henderson way back in 1926, and has been performed by varied and sundry artists ranging from Peg Leg Bates, Sammy Davis, Ella, Harry Connick, Jr., and I think even Bob6Stringer (when he was working with Hackneybloke) sang this in an Abbott & Costello movie one time.

Thanks for listening and take good care now,

Michael

True story, Sensei of Swing
Guilty as charged -- except we were more of an Abbott & Costello knock-off, hired to tour the USA in a Chevrolet for a government road movie P.R. job pimping War Bonds. Sadly, the audio isn't ours; the studio subbed-in studio hacks when Jools and I got in a fist fight over my chop-chords and his excessively cheery (gag me with a bayonet) pre-skiffle treatment.

Now that the war's over (WW II the Big One), I hope to see you in a club one day, Sensei of Swing, Did I say I love everything you touch in your "solo career" as well as with the boffo, new Easy Aces? I thought so.

Hey there Bob!
Yeah, I seem to remember it more clearly now! I think you guys were Monogram's (a "poverty row" studio) version of A&C (how was it like working with Huntz Hall and Leo Gorcey is what I want to know). I remember my dad telling me had seen you guys with Martha Raye, Francis Langford, Jerry Colonna and the Glenn Miller Orchestra from that USO tour--this would have been in the states I think, as my dad's military duty took him all the way from Philadelphia to North Carolina if I remember correctly. I've read that you guys eventually broke up because Jools thought you were getting all the attention, but to be honest, I must admit, you really were the featured attraction in the team. I almost cried the time Frank Sinatra reunited you two on a March of Dimes telethon a long time back--that was wonderful! Well, you take care now--and despite my maundering and palavering here--thanks again Bob! You're tops!

To save you time, the film was called "Abbott & Costello Get Rubbed Out" (1946)--I think they co-starred with Lee Marvin, Jack Palance, and Scratch, the Wonder Crab in that one. Thanks again (and yes--what a great arrangement this is, and how!) Take care now! Michael

i think i had to fave and run yesterday - so let me come back to TELL you how fabulous this is! i just love your voice michael - what a treat every time i hit "play" on one of your songs! i so wish i could hear you sing "Boogie Woogie Bugel Boy" but since it's the WWII era it can't possibly be in the PD yet. but i've had that thought a few times now - love that song - would love to hear your voice on it! oh well - THIS is a close second!

Karen!
Weirdly enough, the Aces and I were discussing doing a boogie-woogie song and yeah, "Bugle Boy" crossed my mind but I think because of the Bette Midler version it's still copyrighted somehow (never fails!) but we're thinking of going in that direction (we are all big fans of 8 to the bar), maybe with an original rip-off version of it or something! Thanks again--as always you are much too kind to me! Take care now, Michael

This one
wasn't as easy for you was it? I hear an incredibly difficult song to sing well. You did it justice and I really enjoyed it Michael. I would bet you think you could do a better job on it too. The only thing that might be missing is a little of the ease in which you usually deliver these great songs BUT this one would be a serious challenge for any "great" singer to pull off. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Peace

Hi Guy
Your ears are very discerning! Yeah, this was not an easy one, at least the way I wanted to sing it, which was with a full baritone kind of voice, although I'm classified as a counter baritone--sort of between tenor and baritone. My problem is, to get more weight into those higher notes, it's better if I'm standing, and the way I have things set up here when I record, I need to be seated (I don't exactly have what anyone would mistake for a "studio" set up, let me tell you!) I think you read my mind about the performance on this song too! Thanks, as always, for the encouragement and support you've given me here--take good care now, Michael

Awsome stuff..
Always loved big band music and the classics. My father let me know that before rock was loud, big bands were loud and would knock the crowd back with volume. Enjoyed.

Hi Joel!
Oh yeah, you better believe some of those bands were loud! I fell in love with them the first time I heard a live big band playing at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City when I was about 12 (which was in 1976)--I knew then and there that was for me. Thanks very much for stopping in and listening! Take care now, Michael

Hey, hope you are doing well chief! Well, you know me, I have to look up "Ella Guru" now on Google (OK--yanno, it's sickening to realize that I was up and running when that song came out but I've never heard of it before. I remember Captain Beefheart though!) This has been mutually educational for us maybe? Thanks again Dick--you take care and enjoyed hearing from you. Michael

usually play a bit of rock and blues myself but one of my big fav's is swing music and I do love it, this is great Michael, another wonderful vocal and so good to hear this. I do love that big band sound, the dynamics in the music and volume are so good to hear live. I'm going to try and catch up with your other posts, this is wonderful, D/L and very much enjoyed!
