Psalm 142 (Freestyle of the Biblical Verse)

Get Flash to see this player.

Psalm 142 is a song written by King David when he was captured and put in a cave by his enemies. In this Psalm David speaks of being alone, afraid, and weary of his persecutors. David asks God to rescue him from his plight so that he can once again offer up praises. I was inspired by the word of this Psalm so much that I put together this simple backtrack, closed my eyes and sang whatever melody that came to me. I did this song in one take. I'm new at mixing and producing so please go easy on me! P.S. I placed this song in R&B instead of gospel because it just didnt't sound like a gospel song to me...more inspirational. Angela

David prays for preservation from his persecutors.

1 I cried unto the Lord with my voice; with my voice unto the Lord did I make my supplication.
2 I poured out my complaint before him; I shewed before him my trouble.
3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me.
4 I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.
5 I cried unto thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.
6 Attend unto my cry; for I am brought very low: deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I.
7 Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.

I thought the backing track was very strong. The vocals were carried by the fact that your voice is awesome. It allowed me to overlook how you seemed to be forcing the words to fit the music a fair amount of the time. It's not your fault -- the bible wasn't written to a rhythm even in Hebrew (it was written with repeated verbs and nouns as points of emphasis instead), and thus, how could the English translation be MORE rhythmic? The Bible's musicality is that of intonation...also I highly doubt that the psalm can be artistically attributed to King David, at least formally.

A message
If this was how David prayed, he would have been saved sooner. This is a great recitation.

Your voice is solid on this. You could probably take this up a notch if you redid the vocals and added some backing vocals on top.

I like this form, sort of open praise. You would do well interpreting the Psalms as you can use them to tell your own story (as could we all). You, unlike most of the rest of us, have the weapons to do the warfare.
I agree, its anointed.

Simple and beautiful ... you got the pipes!
David (and his English translators ...) provided the lyrics, and the vocalist did all the rest:   a freestyle interpretation of a sometimes-complicated lyric against a smooth Rhodes + Drum-kit backdrop.   Nice.
