recently got in touch with an old friend; we played in a band together in the late 80's. we were often homeless, drunken scuzzy types who went by the name The Couch Sluts. We had a love of Jim Beam and traditional pop, but couldn't ever rehearse anywhere but our front porch or onstage. a fond memory I have is showing up to play a trashy version of a Journey song, telling the crowd to F@#K OFF, and walking offstage. ahh, such is youth. long time ago. anyways my friend (Tom) is just getting into recording and he sent me 3 guitar tracks and a bass line. this was one of his first experiments so the timing is a little weird, but fine with me.

i added some vocals, drums and a few other things. was kind of going for a 70's pop song ala the Ray Conniff Orchestra meets Herb Albert.

any feedback n how to make this better production-wise would be much appreciated. haven't recorded anything in months, so my ears might need some settling in.

Hey Michael
cool song
i think a couple of things spring to mind for me on first listen
1) guitars too forwards in the mix
2) vocals too far back
otherwise, nice clean sounds on the recording/instruments

Love the Ray Coniff Singers
This gets close to the vibe and sounds really sweet. I'm fine with the mix - and it's great to hear you singing again. Your ears may be rusty - but not your pipes.
Some strings and bongos would complete the Coniff effect. Maybe a short trumpet line too for the Alpert touch.

Nice musically
but I think I agree with Bryn ( particledots ) about the vox vs guitars in the mix. You might try using a little compression on the vocals to bring them up in the mix a little. Remember, with compression, a little goes a long way, so use it sparingly,

Since I don't hear as well as I used to, I can't understand the lyrics very well. My natural tendency is to mix vocals a little more up front than I should, so my advice on the mix is certainly not gospel. Get a second opinion before you take my advice.

I like what you got started, and can't wait to her where you go with it Michael.

Kudos you you both

i like the mood of this!

feedback: i don't know, but perhaps the vocals are getting buried because the guitars (and maybe the keyboards) are in the same frequency range - so they "mask" the consonants in the vocals?

Sounds good on phones
At first I didn't hear what Bryn referred to, but after a while, it did seem like the guitars (especially the LHS, could be dropped back a little.
Works really well for me as a song/performance, but the mix might need a bit of a re-think.

A very cool song
I'll leave the production suggestions to more experienced ones, as far as I'm concerned, I enjoyed the listen. Nice work.

I like it
really neat song, reminds me more of pink floyd than ray coniff but what the heck!
I'm not going to second guess the mix cuz you know what you're doing...
I like that clean punchy guitar tone and the chord changes / melody.
Hopefully we'll hear more from you and your buddy.

The tremolo guitar, Farfisa sounding organ and dreamy vocals whisper summer of love. Nice!

Really cool vibe on this.
The vox could maybe just come up a tiny bit but it's not like you listen to it and think 'where the hell are the vox?'
Sort of Super Furry Animals feel to it.
Good job it's sunny outside as this track fits well with the view.

Very Cool
Wow, this is awesome. Love the track, it certainly reminds me of Summer. Kind of laid back & relaxing which is great. Dig the vocals too, terrific song!

well ....
i read all the comments about the vox vs. guitar ..... the deal is this works well as is for me. Man you are in fine form here vocally. Nice track and no nits about anything... just cool to have a new M2 fix. Nice track Michael and Tom

thanks guys. haven't had the time to reply to anyone individually. busy life makes for a bad MJer. I think everyone is right about the guitar levels, I actually though that as I mixed it. i tend to prefer my vox on the lower side, so i will review those when I re-mix. thanks for your input and comments.

Sounds more than good to me Michael. Love the vibe of all those tracks from Tom. The synths are perfect for that summer of love vibe (as if I knew what was that). Timing may be little loose but don't think it's weird (but i didn't play on top of that, so may be).
I like subdued vocals too, love the way it is. Mix is like cooking a question of taste.
Now if you ask me about production... mmh. Let's see... i'd like an almost ambient bridge with segments of that crazy lead guitar track stretched in time and with wild echos and verbs, played backwards in parts if possible. And an octave jump in the vocals somewhere ;-)

Great vibe
more West coast 60s than 70s for me. I really like the laid back, trippy feel :-)

You asked for production comments so fwiw....

The hard panned guitar is a little too piercing for my ears and a touch loud. I'd take some top off, put a little more reverb on and push it further away.

And just to reinforce that 60s vibe maybe flanged backing vocals ;-)

Very nice song. I'll be interested to hear what you do with it.

kind of
off kilter and odd. But I like it. Like a drunken Beach Boys song done by the Replacements on a really good night (when they were just slightly sober) The vocals are lilting and submissive is a tripped out sunshiney daydream kinda way. Always like the windows into your personal history. They make mine seem so tame, OK except for the 60 year old wino "lady" who did a strip tease in the bar when we were doing our sound check in Kansas City.

we had a love of jim beam and traditional pop
if i had a nickel for every love story that began with that sentence...

man i so enjoy your dreamy aesthetic, all those plinky chimes and blurred vocals. great dynamic on this one between the dual leads and the bass, makes for a great texture. hope to hear more from the new couch sluts.

Fantastic. So what the guitars are a tad hot but I like how the vocal kind of hides just behind them. There is a synth or keys part that creeps out of the RHS at times, I would bring that up in the mix a bit. Great feeling and vibe to this. I can definitely pictures this playing as the sun sets to a beautiful day. Well done sir! I hate you with your 'haven't recorded anything in months' statements and then this sounds better then the majority of stuff on here! Hahaha!

In every way just fab, though as others have commented, that left panned guitar needs tweaking. Otherwise massive all together.

Reminds me of early Pink Floyd, in a really good way.

Very West Coast feel
Pleasant and drifty, and mellow is a good keyword. Its funny to go from drunken fuzzy types to chilled music like this.
