I haven't posted in a while, largely due to misplacing my disc for Finale and consequently not having it installed on my computer since I built it last year. I finally went and upgraded to Finale 2011, so to celebrate having Finale installed again, I quickly put together a medley of the hymns for this week's service. I'm having difficulty getting the instruments to sound as good as they used to for me, so I didn't spend as much time on orchestration tweaking this time, but I thought it turned out rather well for the minimal time invested and thought I'd share.

I decided to make this because despite giving the congregation opportunities to subtly pick up the tunes to new hymns for weeks on end in advance by using it during prayer time, for the prelude and postlude voluntaries, for offertory, etc, people still aren't picking up on them as well as we'd like. My hope is to create one of these each week to play in the background as gathering music before the service begins.

The hymn tunes are Seek Ye, Duke Street, Living for Jesus, and Penitent.

As a church musician
I like this idea. I've tried this kind of thing at the beginning of each church season, but I play it through for the prelude music. Are you in the position of having this particular recording playing before the service? That would be really great, because you could have it playing while you were doing other preparation. It's a bit of a time investment outside of the usual church organist's time, but I know that it's more satisfying to play for a congregation that actually sings while you play the accompaniment.

I haven't posted anything in ages, either, I'm working on music for a Thanksgiving service that I hope to post in the next month. anyway, nice to hear your music.

I'm a software developer, but I happen to really like music, particularly of the classical or humorous variety (especially Gilbert & Sullivan). I studied piano regularly from when I was 8 until I was nearly 14, although I continue to practice on occ... [see more]
