The Open Door

Get Flash to see this player.

a dream of untold magnitude, where your past walks up to you out of the fog of time and sits with you. what does one do when the opportunity arises to look over from a vista at your you? this is taken from a Jim Carrol story he used to tell.
I wrote it for the kid band(they were all 13 and 14 yers old) i was working with at the time, and still work with some members "too busy being bored", they had never been in a studio at all and this is what we came up with as we worked for three days on 4 songs. you will be hearing my voice in all the back ups.

its night out
from where i sit
further up the beach
lost in the dunes
between the shivers of the moon
where the grass grows in patches
matted like hair
on the backside of a dog
sitting on a pearl
the chain of an emerald
lost necklace night
appears in the northern sky
a melting mass of vapor
embraces the spray
its crested with foam
and the first thing i see is a
house come into focus
candy cane of smoke
calmly flowing upward
from a chimney made of stone
that was taken from a wall
built during the revolutionary war
and i see you standing
in the open door

and I
I and I
I and I
I will see you through
Its always I
I and I
I and I
will be waiting
and i'm waiting for you

a salt turbine turning
darkly on the shore
the fog is returning
suffused and full
a story with water
i understand no more
as the light passes quickly
as i had before
bright is my direction
for good or for bad
locked in the majesty
on longest of land
merging below
we understand whats in store
and i see you all the way through
the open door

and I
I and I
I and I
I will see you through
Its always I
I and I
I and I
will be waiting
and i'm waiting for you

his words keep on floating
rising and lost
an unchartered ocean
where power gets across
their stepping down the stairs
and into the sand
some water never dries
where we began
i've seen him standing
one with the light
one hand raised
coming in with the tide
take a step across
an ocean water floor
just now coming in through
the open door

and I
I and I
I and I
I will see you through
its always I
I and I
I and I
will be waiting
and i'm waiting for you

fender guitars, gibson guitars, a cool 69" fender bass, ludwig drums, a great B3

What a great song - love the B3
besides the writing - backups and I presume producing what else are you doing here. Is the at one of the kids on lead vocals?
Excellent production - great lyrics. This is top stuff. My daughter had a band in Brooklyn when she was 16 - and being her roadie got me back on stage with Splinter and then Airport Seven.
Where did this band happen?

what i do
yes it is one of the kids, peter landi, until this session, he was vocally challenged, i kicked everyone out of the studio and first layed down a vocal track myself for him to use as a guide, its my oldest trick, and line by line he nailed it. i played the B3
i wanted to make another point of mentioning Jim Carrol, do you know who he was? songwriter/author/cool guy, i just wish his peeps knew of what i did to his story, with his permission by the way, so, what is/was your daughters band name? the boys played in the city quite a bit, until now they have all gone to college, and the projects break off into me getting whomever is around to throw down tracks, or peter and 4est are my helpers in teaching songwriting in the summers. the band is from out here in sag.cheers. o.

Spiraling downward
Love the darkness in the song and specially the performance. The chorus is great. Full sound.
Production perfect. Instant fan.
Man, I remember how ugly I sang (to my ears) when I was 14. I wish I'd had something like you around back then.

a producer
i guess that is why i started working with the boys in the first place, they needed a guide, and i was there to do it. as well as them writing with me and me attempting to write lyrics that related to them, i used to watch them interact to pick up clues as to what was in the mix of their minds, it worked out until it burned out. i still work with 2 of the guys, they are talented and it is a great thing.cheers

powerful stuff for 14 yr olds. when i was 14 i thought ramones tunes were complicated. nothing gives me hope for the world like watching a bunch of kids rock and roll. cool post.

i know the ramones were the coolest
thank you sir, what was the most cool was seing them perform this in front of adult audiences and listening to them trip out on the lyrics from the mouths of kids, it was very entertaining as a fly on the wall, of course i was the guy in the audience that knew the words, so it usually lead to conversation...
