Description
This song is about reminding myself to not take things so seriously all the time, hence the title.

This started out as messing around on the piano while I was supposed to be vacuuming the living room. I came up with the simple variations on the piano progressions then built the drum programming around it. I thought it would be a cool groove to solo some sax over, a challenge for me to come up with 2 minutes of improvisation as I'm better at the quick solos. Anyway, as usual, I also had to add a bit of horn section accompanyment. This is also the first time I've actually played and recorded a real bass guitar. So I'm hoping that this tune comes across as a bit of electronic/breakbeat groove mixed with some jazz-like stylings. I'm not a jazz trained musician by any stretch, but I do love to listen to it. Enjoy.

Hey
Nice one Chris.
The percussion sounds great with smooth jazzy sax.
The vibe you've created with the instrument combo's is something I'm not familiar with but it makes for some fine listening. Its a tune which comes with a thousand images too.
Bass is simple but super effective.
Nice tune, nice mix..... Nice one!
Kicbal said 3142 days ago (November 9th, 2010)
Thanks my friend
The mix fell into place so easily this time around. Possibly because I only have 10 tracks to this song instead of the usual 20 or more. Looking forward to laying down some some hits on your next tune.

Wish
I could play sax! This is very cool, from the "On Broadway" melodic invitation to the drums (and of course the sax solo). Only part I hear that limits this is the bass track, but in the circumstances you describe, it's also an excellent effort.
A very nice piece of "lightening up" music, and a most enjoyable listen.

Thanks
Coming from one of the long time heavies of the MJ community, your comment and listen mean a lot. I do hope to get a bit better at playing some occasional bass parts. It's fun to try and pick up a new instrument after all these years. The basslines are in my head, but the translation or any attempt at translation gets lost as I have no skills on the instrument.

Hey Chris
great to see you post! this is a great light jazzy totally enjoyable listen, I love the clean mix, and I'd keep thumpin' that bass, by the sounds of it it wouldn't take you long to be really good, love the sax and the piano progression is very cool, 2 thumbs up in my book!

feeling lighter now
thanks for that! very cool saxophone solo. sax sounds good but maybe a bit dry in certain places (matter of taste, expander? mild plate reverb?, but you can hear how much fun you had recording this and it comes across!!

Thanks JD & Pari
You can't always rock out 100% of the time on the sax, yet the bass guitar is ever present. I really just want to get good enough so I can put my foot up on the floor monitors during a live show and rock it like Gene Simmons ;)

The sax is indeed pretty dry on this by choice. There is about 15% reverb and a bit of delay, just enough to give the sax a a bit of a tail when space in the music lets you hear it. The sax is also pretty upfront in the mix, again I really wanted this immediate sound, but I do love an effects drenched horn when the mood fits too.

Oscillations
Very nice. I especially like the parts when you have multiple saxes playing, particularly the section that begins at 1:28 with the two note oscillations... I think you could have gone even further with that idea if you wanted to, maybe adding another oscillating line to it and exploring different harmonies. But what you have is fine as is too! Here's to not doing the things we're supposed to (like vacuuming) and making music instead!

Musical Science?
Hmmm, I wish I could say that there was a lot of reason happening with my rhyme but any oscillations or any other seemingly intended musical consequences are (almost) accidental. The section at 1:28 was done on a whim and ended up sounding kinda cool. Thanks for your comments and for helping to define what I was actually playing.

Too Kind
I took some piano lessons back in high school, but by then the damage was done. I'd been playing the sax long enough that it had destroyed my ability to grasp bass and treble clef dexterity, since all effort on the sax only produces one note at a time. So my piano skills are lacking. I don't even know what chords I'm playing, all done by ear. . . and this piano part is so simple. So many thanks, especially coming from someone who owns the instrument like you do. I've never heard it referred to as the "piano spine" I like that.

and
besides some really decent sax going on here, you have incorporated some sweet change-ups that are ear candy.

Sax sounds great, and it is hard to believe this is your first time playing the bass. Good groove reminiscent of George Benson's "On Broadway". Nicely done!

cool groove
nice bass line esp for the first time.
This is a really nice tight track. With so many live instruments tracked at different times that is not always so easy to do for some people. Good job on this one.

Thanks Harold/RosaLinda/dave_b/announcer
If yer main instrument is sax and you can't get the sound right, well . . . that would be a shame. So I'm happy that people are liking the sound and apparently the actual notes and progressions coming out of it. To think that my brian actually thought I had come up with some original piano groove. I too thought of "On Broadway" after I had the basic tracks recorded, but figured that by the time I was done there would only be a hint of it at the beginning.

Coolness
Playing music definitely beats vacuuming! What a great funky beat you got going. Great stuff, wish it was longer.

I wish it was longer too, but I quickly run out of ideas when improvising, so best to keep things brief and wanting. Thanks for listening.

My suggestion to you
I heard about these robots who would vacuum just by itself (after some learning curve).

Buy one of those :-) It would leave more time for music and more tunes likes this for us to enjoy !

good stuff. sounded jazzy enough to me. I like to hear multi-instrumentalists. I see you're using Garageband. If you decide to keep playing your own bass, try the 'warm DI box' in the bass guitar pre-sets. I find it gives it a nice realistic warmth and sets it apart from the other instruments.

I shoulda thought of that.
Totally forgot that you can use amp modeling on bass too. I just ran the thing direct and did some compression and eq and called it good. I may have to revisit this mix as some point.

kickball my man
Opening reminds me of Ramsey Lewis and then you take it to funk with a blues piano. Really reminds of the Jazz Clubs in the late 60's and early 70's. Your feel for the music is real and transmitted as such. I really like the arrangement..more importantly the skill of actually playing impresses me the most. I hear you clearly. Thank you for your offering. Fine composition!
