Description
I challenged myself to create a piece entirely of original sounds. So what you hear are all from recordings I made over the past couple days. Recordings of raindrops, splashes, piano strings, door slams and others. It's bizzarre, and far from perfect, but I had a blast with it. And now I have a library of unique sounds to add to my collection.

This was my final assignment for a music tech class I'm taking. The requirements were to make a piece in Abeton and use some recorded audio. So here was an opportunity to record all those sounds I thought were cool, and to try to create something unique from something ordinary. It was raining a couple nights ago, so I borrowed my friends Zoom H4n and went out to record it. A policeman stopped to ask me questions, and was a probably a little weirded out by my explanation of why I was leaning over some plants at 2am in the rain. It was fun though, and I really hope to do more recording, sampling, and sound design in the future.

For anyone that wants to expand their library of sounds, I highly recommend going out and recording the sounds around you. It's amazing what they can turn into.

Assignment
Well, you delivered. Move to the head of the class. Really creative. Perfectly moody. Enjoyed reading your description too.

good idea
and who is to say - in this rhelm ~
just what comprises "perfect"
now just where was the policeman ?
at least no violation was cited - i hope -
it's for the betterment of our culture of creativity - thanks for sharing - it is
something that makes me appreciate the opportunity given to me - to be surrounded
by four walls - a floor and a ceiling
great work !

Re: Scott
Haha, no citation thankfully. :) And, you're right, who can say what's perfect? I just have this feeling that if this was played on nice speakers, it would sound really boomy.

Glad you appreciated it! Making this really expanded the realm of possibilities for me.

No pipes were harmed
and no strings pulled. This does conjure up a quiet rainy daydream. Inspires me to get out with my portable recorder, which sits forlorn on a shelf in the closet. Hope your professor liked this as much as I did.

Re: Henry
You should get that recorder out! I don't think you'll regret it. This made me think in ways that I hadn't before, which is always fun. Glad you liked the daydream!

As for my professor, it was quite a different approach than most people. He wasn't expecting a sound design cue like this. But I think he appreciated it.

No sonic boom!
I just listened on the big speakers, and there is no sense of boom or mud. There is body to the "gong", but it sounds clean.

I have a friend who does Foley work, and she would really appreciate this. I tend to think of portable recording as going someplace to record a performance with an SUV full of mike stands and cables. I hadn't thought about doing a truly ambient soundscape.

Re: Henry
Well, that's good to hear! That "gong" is my favorite part of this piece. It's me hitting the low strings of a piano with my hand. I transposed it down some semitones to give it a nice low sound. I'll be using that sound in the future, I'm sure of that!

As far as portable recording goes, I hadn't thought of this either! If I owned that Zoom mic, I think I'd be carrying it everywhere. "Could you make that noise again?" ...Well, maybe it's good I don't then.... :)

Re: Symphony101
Very high praise Yves, thank you. You're right, I do have high standards. I should probably stop admitting that publicly. :D
