Demo: PWE amplifier

Demonstration recording of a new amplifier I'm in the process of building. This is still in the early stages and there are a lot of tweaks and changes that I have in mind to make, but the general sound of the amp is mostly in place. I'm shooting for something that has very chime-y/bell-like cleans but can go into moderate levels of power tube crunch, mainly controlled by the volume settings on the guitar and the the player's pick attack. You should be able to hear points in the recording where I've controlled the onset of distortion simply by varying how hard I sound individual notes. Wide ranging dynamic feel was one of the main design goals for this amp.

The amp itself puts out somewhere in the vicinity of 1.5 to 2.5 Watts (I still need to do a more careful measurement). It has a real pentode push-pull output stage that is driven by a long tail pair phase inverter (6J6 tube). The preamp is a 6AK5 pentode.

I used a Gibson Les Paul with EMG pickups for the recording. The cabinet was a Marshall 1936 2X12 with Celestian G75T 12" speakers. The guitar is recorded in stereo - the left channel is a Sennheiser e609 microphone into a MOTU828mkIII firewire interface, and the right channel a Shure SM& into one of my homebuilt dual 12AV7 mic preamps into the MOTU firewire interface.

I should mention that there is a high pitched ringing that is present at low volumes throughout the recording. This is due to microphonics from the 6AK5 input tube. I have since replaced the tube and the ringing is gone.

Very warm sound with a nice modderate gain sound. Quite a cool skill you have there. Haven't heard a bad amp from you yet.

Sounds like a hybrid
Great amp build!
It has a bit of that Vox chime at the beginning, mixed with the warmth of a Fender (or Mesa Boogie).
It's almost like a blend of el84 and 6L6 tubes.
The single not stuff at the end starts to sound like a low volume vintage Marshall.
