The Holly and the Ivy feat. Joe Gurner, Mark Holbrook and Ledebutant

 Genre: Holiday

From Joe Gurner: It was great being thrown into a thresome with Matt and Mark... Wait, that sounds wrong. How about trio? That's better. Then to have Lisa join in as the fourth member of the trio was just an extra bonus. The three of them produce such incredible music I knew I'd be in for a real treat working with them. I think it really worked to our advantage too that none of us were overly familiar with the tune before hand so we went in with no preconceived notions and came out the other side with, IMHO, a really cool sounding take on a classic carol.

Many thanks again to Matt, Lisa and Mark for all the work they put into this. It's been a blast for me and has actually made me a little bit less Grinchy for the holidays this year. And thanks to everyone here at MJ for all of their support over the years. You guys really are the best.

From Mark Holbrook: I've known of both jgurner and Illuminati for some time and listened to much of their music. When we were paired I was pretty excited except being the hacker that I am I was barely familiar with Holly and the Ivy. I knew of the song but had never sung or played it. Matt was great. He laid down a pretty full starter track. I got fired up and laid down some drums to it using Superior Drummer.

Matt then laid down some vocals with Lisa and then Joe sang. Finally it was all left to me... So I knuckled down and did vocals and some guitar work. All in all I've enjoyed the process and I have found myself driving around town humming and singing the tune we put together! I owe a ton of thanks to Matt, Joe and Lisa for getting the basic track going! This was a great experience!

From Matt: What a treat to work with Joe and Mark, and big thanks to Lisa for keeping this from being a solely testosterone infused holiday carol. Scary thought, eh? I had a blast being a part of taking a song that seems to have been done traditionally as a staid, somber hymn dedicated to a prickly green bush and turning it into a celebration of relations and fine wine. Or maybe I missed the point. Anyway, enjoy the song, and season's greetings!

The holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown,
Of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears the crown.
Oh, the rising of the sun and the running of the deer,
The playing of the merry organ, sweet singing in the choir.
The holly bears a blossom as white as lily flower,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ to be our sweet saviour
The holly bears a berry as red as any blood,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ to do poor sinners good.
The holly bears a prickle as sharp as any thorn,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ on Christmas Day in the morn.
The holly bears a bark as bitter as any gall,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ for to redeem us all.

What a great
group of guys and gals! Enjoyed doing this. I think the measure of any song either that you write or you hear is if you find yourself walking or driving around singing it in your head then you've found a good tune! I can't get this out of my head! A very enjoyable project!

What a wonderful group effort
the backing is really exciting and joyful and everyone sounds so comfy with their vocals. Nice rounding towards the end. I got choked up at the end with the love and merry business. Cheers to you and to all here at MJ.

Happy Hollydays
Thanks you guys for including me in this bit of Christmas fun. It's always a joy for me to do stuff with Matt and Joe and a real pleasure to work with Mark the first time on such a happy piece of music. You did such a great job on putting everything together, Matt, as usual. Thanks for taking the time to make this happen.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

And may I point out that this is Matt's vocal debut on MJ? That's him on "the holly bears a prickle as sharp as any thorn," verse. He sang the first vocal and we all sang after him, so he's responsible for the phrasing and vibe of the whole thing. Good job, mister. :)

vocals that power this, a not very familiar Christmas tune. Very festive and decorated background music put together with just the right punch. Love Lisa's shout out. Great job, band. Thanks.

One of my favourite carols..
I love this carol - I used to sing it every christmas, and I always used to solo the chorus when the school choir sang it. Nice take on it!!
