Treading Water

First off this is a post of a song I put up last year in that mad rush of putting far too many songs up too quickly when first arriving at MJ. However the previous one was shortened and on reflection possibly neutered. This was the original that I listened to again recently. The basis is a completely live take over two mics with me on guitar/ vocal and Steve on the mandola. It was one of those magic sessions when things just flowed. We’d only just written this and when it came to the mandola solo there was a kind of synergy that’s one of the best bits of playing music live when two musicians just intuitively know where to go with a song.

I added a few overdubs of vocals and percussion but after it sat in the vaults for 2 ½ years and on re listening I decided it ought to get a public airing. Brings back some great memories. As for the lyrics….well that’s my family!!

Treading water

I feed my son and my father
Through a plastic cup
One life is beginning
One is almost up

I wish I’d known him for longer
I wish I’d known him before
All the stories he told us
All the things he saw

I might be treading water
But I’m happy in my pond

Sister works in a bar now
For far too many hours
The locals come to flirt with her
Time is running out

Mother travels the world now
She’s on an endless cruise
Don’t know what she’s scared of
She’s gonna have to choose

I might be treading water
But I’m happy in my pond

Loved it !
Great intro riff.

A bleak edge to the lyrics.

"Happy in my pond"? That's a very Buddhist take on it.

Very nicely done and as you say, there is a synergy there that doesn't happen very often.

All-Around Awesome
Oh, this is SO Neil Young, I love it! These are incredible lyrics too--simple and straightforward while talking about the deep stuff of life. This is just all-around great. The mandolin and guitar shimmer together, and the vocals are clear and spot-on.

thought provoking and apt for A New Year I suppose. Not neccesarily a happy new one tho'!?

I do like the jangliness of the git and the Mandolin...I sometimes work out on the Mandolin but not as effectively as Mr Steve here, hats orf...ah yes Jungian as Cat 22 puts it (Neil Young-esque).Like it.

HaNeYear.....I am knackered

all the best

Busker Jam
Sounds just like the label this one, impressive how you kept it together so well.

The percussive, almost shouted vocals and very bright strings seem ideal for getting heard in a street setting, as if a couple of wide-boy buskers (nothing meant by that, lads!) were trying out their own stuff and singing it lustily in the mall, with half an eye on the ladies, and the other watching for the constabulary!

Full of energy and enthusiasm, this one, i'd put a penny in the hat every time!

Have a great, very musical New Year,

Great lyrics
sung with gusto and played with rhythm and interesting harmonies. Glad you decided to put it up again.

I know what you mean about the urge to put up too many things when first joining. I think I'm doing that, too.

Stripped to the essentials, it shines.
A real "beaut," guys. A great tune stripped to its hollow-body bones. Just don't feed your son to your father and everything will work-out fine. Okay, seriously, these lyrics really touch-down more deeply than a joke, they feel very real to me. Thanks for posting.

Treading Water
Nice lyrics. Heartfelt message without being soppy. Cool ope reverb sound. The heavy stereo delay between the two (or doubled) guitar tracks is a little distracting, it's just a little severe, IMHO. The chorus chord progression is my fav. very warm and fulfilling. Well done guys.
