Description
A song about one of my grandmas, who spent most of her life with being bitter and bent. Sad, but true.

Lyrics
Bitter and Bent

You won`t waste a smile on people you meet
You won`t lend a hand when someone`s in need
You don`t do a favour, you don`t help me out
You don`t open doors, when I come running around

You don`t ask for friendship, you don`t ask for treats
I don`t know if you have a heart that beats
There`s no love in you, just cold blooded hate
So bitter the mind, always cursing your fate

Bitter and bent
Another day wasted, a whole life spent
On the eve of your days
Through all the twisted ways
You are what you always have been
and bent

You have come a long way, always on a straight line
A step aside always considered a waste of time
You buried your feelings in a burglar-proof safe
You buried your heart in the deepest and darkest cave

On the eve of your day
You will always remain
You are what you have been
You will stay the same
Bitter and bent

You find a fly in the ointment of most everything
You deeply dispise the joy that fun and humour bring
You scream and shout, you curse and swear
So bitter the mind, so hard for you to bear

You spend your life in the night
You switch out every little light
All alone against the rest of man
But you don`t give a damn!

I'm hearing
Jim Croce. Great storytelling song. Oh, what a poor woman and how sad for the family that loved her anyway. I'm impressed. Vocals were right on that was some really nice harmonica. Thanks.

Bitter
Don't know quite what to make of this! Accompaniment is well put together but seems to have escaped from a much more upbeat song, very reminiscent of Donovan and his youthful, angelic themes, but this is actually a very dark and bitter song about a dark and bitter person.

There is no love in the subject, we are told, and there is no love in this song, not even any real sorrow, just a sort of bare put-down that, one suspects, might not really say everything about this old woman anyway.

Sorry to be so negative, but i think you will admit that it is a very negative song!

You play well, and your vocal is good, but it is still a deeply depressing experience to hear this.

i hope that this song has at least been a cathartic experience for you and with all these negative feelings vented you can put your undoubted talent into something a little more uplifting and generous!

Thank you!
Yes, I admit it's depressing, but believe me, it's a true story. I remember her this way and it was good for me to write this song, trying to find words and expression for my feelings. It's not really cathartic for me, I feel very sorry for her, because she wasted so much time with useless grief and hate. And it a warning for myself of not making the same mistakes or dealing with the same bad attitudes or habits...

Bitter and Bent
You convey the emotion of the song so well that we too are horrified that a person could be like this. Very good guitar, harmonica and vocal very Dylanesque.

Loved it
The world ain't full of perfect people. Concur with analogies with Donovan and Dylan - but do I detect some Len Cohen vibe going on? There's no doubt you are a great guitarist, singer and songwriter judged only on this song. Sad that the song is true, but then there are many elderly people who are unhappy with their lot and have great expectations of others.
