Description
Song 8 of 10 - North of the Humber

This is a companion piece to ‘Grace Darling’ and refers to the same terrible night when the ‘Forfarshire’ was wrecked on the Farne Islands. Of the people who were found to be still alive when Grace and her father reached Harcar Rock, there was among them a woman called ‘Mrs Dawson’ holding her two children. Both infants were dead. She survived, and i know nothing more about her; just a name and a heartrending image that would not give me any peace until I wrote a song about it.

Lyrics
Mrs Dawson Weeping

Round the wild gulls wheel and cry,
And slow and with a sigh the waves on the wild coast lie,
While out to sea, the distant islands stand,
Where the fame of the Longships maid began,

But walking on the sweeping shore,
Under Bamburgh’s walls and castle door,
The ones that i hear are those that were not saved,
The voices of those that were lost beneath the waves,

And Mrs Dawson weeping,
In the thunder of the storm,
Holding close her little ones,
Who would not see the morn!
For all her love and tender care
Her children died beside their mother there.

The dunes are high that the wind has made,
And grasses lean like men that start afraid,
Keeping up a whispering, fearful din,
Like endless notes that never fall nor fade,

And crows i hear around Bamburgh’s walls,
That pain the air with their harsh and guttural calls,
While tales of the maid that rowed and fared so well,
Charm the air but still the crow calls tell,

Of Mrs Dawson weeping....

Heartbreaking and beautiful. As always I love your guitar accompaniment. But what really makes this stand apart is the oboe! The perfect sound for this song!

Hi Andrew!
Glad the song didn't depress you too much!

The oboe sound is by Ben Boldt and i really love it. Didn't realise that i was such a fan of the oboe till i started messing around with GB instruments.

Thanks for listening

Hi Freddy!
It is sad, isn't it? Unusually so for me, but somehow with all the attention the story of the daring rescue by Grace Darling gets, it seemed right to tell the tale from another angle, from the point of view of someone well-nigh forgotten in all the glorious congratulation!

Thanks for giving it a try

A sad tale, sensitively sung
A sad tale, sensitively sung Marc. In addition, your instrumentation is improving all the time. It really adds depth to this tune. Great descriptive lyrics as well. Thanks for the post. Warm regards, Peter.

The same great songwriting as in the songs I've heard from you before. But the guitar is downplayed a bit, which I think a pity. That flute (?) in the first minute and a half is not my favourite sound. On the other hand, the oboe later is pretty cool, especially with the strings behind.

Hi Victor!
Glad the overall effect was good. The flute sound is a bit bland compared to the real thing. I should have asked you to do me a favour again and put down some brilliant ideas for me.

Thanks for stopping by

Apart from
this being a lovely song full of feeling, I love the warmth and vibrato in your voice, which adds to the emotion. Nice choice and execution of the accompaniment to your guitar and vocal. You do write great poetry I must say.... really enjoyed, regards M

What a sad story. Your voice always sounds so wonderful. What type of mic do you use? It has a great quality and projects your vocals beautifully. Lovely guitar playing as well. Great stuff!

Hi Dani!
i would have thought you would be the person to ask about getting great vocals through a mic!

i just use the internal mic in my little digital mixer, actually, and stand well back! It seems to create a slight natural echo-ey effect and brings my voice out OK, though there is rather a lot of hiss with it.

Thanks for listening to this one. So glad you liked it.

Fragile
Far more poignant than anything McGonagall ever wrote! And very sensitively arranged - although I'd suggest not having your voice quite so high in the mix and boost the level of the accompaniment because it seemed a little far off in places.

Could be the next subject for a song!

No, i don't think i will be taking my holidays so far north with the old banger that i've got for a car!

Thanks for the suggestion regarding the level of the vocals. Much appreciated.

Had no idea i was an oboe fan, but after messing around with all sorts of instruments on GB, it seemed to fit the mood best. Too late to learn the thing properly, though, i think! Brain's in retreat these days!

Yes!
The poetic mystery does not end with physical death and earthly separation, we trust, beauty that indeed seems born for another destiny.

It is a sad song, but imagine the power of the consolation, and how beautiful it would be for greater words than mine to come true,

'Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted'.

Thanks, Dave!
It is a lovely sound, that oboe, isn't it? Just the right amount of vibrato on it, in my view, too.

The next song is just a little bit chirpier, though it is a dream about a funeral, but that's giving away too much!

Cheers now ;-)

So sad
but lovely that you have captured and recorded this in tribute. Your vocal is perfect for this type of song and I like your choice of notes for the ending. Oboe adds texture, but like someone else said, I think the guitar could be a little higher volume in the mix?

Yes, i am glad to have written a song about this tragic figure. There are many tunes about the rescue and the bravery of Grace Darling, but i have never heard one about Mrs Dawson.

Will certainly be thinking about raising the guitar level in the next mix. Thanks for the feedback on that.
