The sunsets in the skies, they will cauterize
The shadows that dog and hound the desperate heels of dawn,
And the winds that flee these seas will bring me to my knees
‘till the ghosts who stalk my poetry have turned their tails and gone –
All your effigies are cracked – yeah, I ain’t never coming back:
The earth that you have plucked will stretch out threadbare like a scar
And all the words that you wield will be battered till they yield,
‘till the ocean eats their echoes and the salt, it bites their sores.

And when I leave I’ll make no sound,
My shadows will remain at home –
The crunch of dead leaves on the ground
Will sing my footsteps when I go...

Nice Groove....
Ya...Know that last segment of the vocal, I would have song it with
the last portion of the Music, I think it would have had more
potency and distinction.....
That part is powerful and your words dictate that same kinda power,
it also would give it more legitimacy to your footsteps.....

Good song tho.....Peace

I dig this. Strong concept and execution on the backing tracks. Enjoy your harp playing as always. Your voice sounds great here.

One nit: Sounds like you're cramming words into the phrase. I would consider editing lines to fit and syncopate better.

When I Go
Hi Ben - this is really good! I think I agree that that last acappella part loses some of the song "umph", although I like the idea of it. Harp sounds really good, and the song hangs together musically in a very cool way. Your voice has improved in leaps and bounds - great post!

I like the backer, and your vocals are sounding good. The phrasing sounds kind of rushed in places. Strong imagery in the lyric.

when i go
i recognise these lyrics from an earlier song...right? the vocals seem uncomfortable....like you're trying to get everything in before the end of the line. the harmonica instrumental is sublime. maybe thin out your lyrics.
the a capella bit at the end doesn't work for me.
but....the fusion of synth and harmonica and bass beat really works - a really cool and groovy soundscape. are you getting more into synth stuff....i kinda liked the rawness of your early stuff....but then i love this fusion stuff you're coming out with too.

There are a couple lines
from a couple different earlier songs -- it's somewhat hybridized. I was kind of going for a cramped feel in the vocals, but I'll definitely consider thinning out the lyrics. As for the a-cappella...that was a personal frivolity, but I find that it's our little excesses that make us who we are as artists. Perhaps I'll take it out. Glad you dug the instrumentals!

As for a shift to fusion-type stuff: I don't plan on making one, per se. I've been working on a lot of harmonica-vocals covers of old blues songs, but I won't be posting those, or even recording them, necessarily. Once something hits me, I'll throw it together real quick and post it up...it won't be too long haha. Cheers, and thanks for the interest.

Cool lyrics Ben
Love the harp. Maybe work on that pitch on the vocals and then the a capella could work.

interesting mix of genres I love the harp :-) was listening on iPhone and put my finger over the little speaker to add vibrato during performance and discovered pretty good sound there ;-) we kind of did a duet with you doing all the work and me barely lifting a finger

it sounds pretty good ;-)

This is your coolest post yet. Cool backer and the harp works well within it! I like the lines you're playing as well. I'm always impressed with your poetry. The a cappella part is particularly powerful lyrically (aren't you rather young to be such a deep thinker? just kidding)

You're also in very good voice here! Your production and mix chops are growing too!

I've been contemplating a blues that is a little unusual recently, and hearing this has been inspiring. I like how you've combined the harmonica and the big electronic sounds. Apart from the acapella ending (which didn't really work for me) , I really liked your vocals on this. Generally though I thought this was a great idea and that you pulled it off really well (except that ending). Doing an acapella section like that required a huge leap of faith, and you get brownie points from me for even attempting it (I wouldn't have ).
Cheers from Oz,

Love the harmonica, it adds a great dynamic, especially that the track starts off funky-ish. Wasn't sure where you were heading, but that is the great part, not knowing. The fusion of genres took me for a ride, and I dug that. Great lyrics, and I love the A Cappella ending! That made the entire song complete, very dramatic and powerful.

Hi Ben. Fusion is a good description of this mash up of electronica with your fine harp playing. Your vocal work is engaging and you do a pretty good job of fitting in all you want to say into the lines. The a capella ending was interesting. Perhaps you just need to concentrate on your pitch a bit more to really round it out. Good work! Regards, Peter.

When I go
This one has some really cool harmonica playing with some serious energy. Really like that. Cool synth loop but it is a bit too oft repeated IMO.

Vocally, I don't think it is quite to the standard of the last 2 from you. The vocal didn't quite get in the groove and the tone was not as strong.

I would also get into the habit of doubling your vocals. Your voice would greatly benefit from it. I use it a lot as well.

This is great. Your vocals are fresh. Good underlying groove going on. Like the harmonica with the verb on it ... haunting. It's great when the music stops and you get all bluesy with your vocals. Good job!

I haven't been playing music for too long. I've dabbled with the guitar for years, but it was only late in 2009 when I started writing my own stuff, and I've loved it ever since. I had always been inventing riffs or short melodies on the guitar, but ... [see more]
