Description
I'm thinking of putting SHAKER - a work I posted a while back - into a new album and have reworked and remixed it.
Love to hear your thoughts.
Cheers,
Charlie

Very spacious
sounding and giving views of corn fields and windy roads with pony and trap.... lovely pace and feel of summer; maybe people dancing around a Maypole..... lovely arrangement and production, regards M

You always excel at capturing the atmosphere of the American frontier. The galloping strings and smooth winds conjure the image of hard working settlers (which of course the Shakers embodied). Side note: I grew up just a few miles east of Shaker Village in Hancock MA.

Hi Charles.......
This piece is glorious. I love the way you've arranged the instruments and the movement is light and airy and in keeping with a certain Copeland tradition.

Wonderful.

I really do hope that you develop this more because it deserves to be.

Take care.

big air country
This has a feeling of spaciousness, blue skies and big breaths of fresh air, nice stuff. I might have hoped for a little dip in the repeated violins near the end to then build to the end, just to vary the dynamics a bit. But those 4ths really evoke Americana don't they? Nice!

Celtic airs?
The repeating string riff and the one-chord structure gives this something of a scottish-celtic-{somewhere in the british isles} dance tune. Pretty cool!

Makes sense.
A lot of "American" sounding music has roots going back to Britain.

Sunshine and Purity
I liked this very much the first time and so was very curious to know what you did in terms of changes. I went back and forth between the two and here's what I hear: I like the subtle addition of the tympani - it gives a grounding to the lightness of the strings and flutes and helps keep them in perspective. I did find that the mix this time was brighter than before and I didn't hear the basses (or cellos in low register) as easily in this version as I did in the last. I quite like your inspiration to put the basses in for the same reason of providing contrast and a grounding context for the higher notes. So if it were me, I would bring the basses back up a bit in the mix, or make the strings less bright. Also, the violins do not seem to be as clear in this version as in the last mix and they seem to overpower the entry of the trumpet - are you using a harmonic exciter or EQ boosting the highs in the chain somewhere?

I love the trumpet entry at 0:44. That was cool to continue to build on the story you are unfolding and it adds a simple dignity that I found brilliantly stated so simply. I know we have talked about the dissonance at 1:00 before, and while I am all for dissonance (love Eric Whittacre's music for example) I think the note at the one minute mark takes me abruptly out of this magical scene you're building up into this bright and airy painting, and it takes a while to get back to this place. Again, a personal reaction and I certainly respect your artistic intent about unattainable perfection.

I really (really) like this piece Charlie as it conveys a purity and lightness that is really well captured by your many compositional choices. It is for his reason that I may seem to be critical, but since you wanted to hear our thoughts I hope to express what I think would take this piece to where it can really shine as you intend.

Definitely you should put this on an album. It is fine work that stands for who you are as a composer and is something that will lighten the days of any who hear it.

Be well my friend,
Doug

A part of me
is humbled that you spend so much time giving serious listening to music here at MJ. I wish I had the knowledge to give such detailed and well thought out critiques and comments as wel. Alas I don't, but I want to tell you that with the exception of that point of dissonance at 1:00 I'm in complete agreement with you on this.

The mix is brighter and I think the piece is helped with the addition of timpani and trumpets but I've lost some of the deeper cellos which I agree added a needed contrast. I'm working with Ozone 4 and I've much to learn. The violin highs could be brought down some in the EQ ( I believe that I did use the harmonic exciter on them).

I'm still amazed that you went back to the original to compare them.
Thank you Doug for your generosity and your friendship.

I love this.
It sounds a bit Celtic but overall it is a lovely American composition. You are quite a talent. I am reminded of Copland, for sure. Thank you.
