Fare Well My Friend
Well this starts quite majestically ... makes me want to stand up straight and hold my heart. Nice change at about 2:04. It does sound like a fare well. You are successful at getting this feeling across.

I like when you create pieces like this. Although it would be nice to hear you sing again. Very touching composition!

.
this was made by changing Fair Weather Friend http://macjams.com/song/67549
first i slowed it down a bit.
i removed the ambient background sounds.
i replaced the vocals with a mix of flute, oboe and bassoon. i already had a midi track of that which had been played on piano way in the background in FWF.
the strings were created from scratch for this tune - i mostly followed the original key, although here and there i took off into some other places. here and there i added a few notes to the melody.
i had no idea idea what to do with part two, which was a simple piano improv buried in ambient noise.
so it stayed like that for a couple of months.

i don't know what made me think of assigning the piano track to a baroque organ, but when i heard it, i knew i had the solution.
i added a few more notes there as well, mostly in the bass to fill out what was mostly only implied by the original recording.

and then i realized i had somehow changed a song that celebrated the return of a friend into a song that mourned the loss of a friend. so i tried to find a simple change of the words of the title "Fair Weather Friend" - changing "fair" to "fare" was the flash of insight. both titles have a the same number of syllables and somehow show their relation - i choose another tree image to amplify that relation, and the beams of light through fog gave it the right spiritual implications...

thanks for the detailed comment - you caught the points where "i took off into some other places" with the string part!

Ah..
now we're talking: mournful but full of optimism of ascending to greater things: very grand. A fitting farewell by any means. The church organ shift at 02:02 was .. well "churchy"... but shared that optimistic feel. The arrangement felt a bit too spontaneous for my tastes when it went into the section from 03:03 and I wondered where you were going with this for a mo... and it felt a bit "unsure". In Summary, a great opening that dwindled a little- if you worked in a return to the opening themes from the lull of 03:03 it might resolve better.
