Lyrics
You have been laying down the law, now,
Some sorry wings to weigh me down.

You’ve been laying down the law, Man,
Sunk shoulders bent beneath your crown.

The dawn will slouch itself away
Before you dare to make a sound.

And the buzzards choke the skies, now,
They’ll flood you staggering alone.

Yeah, the buzzards choke these skies, Man,
Where are these seeds you have sown?

They’ll let you fester in your breath
Till you’re worn as mottled stone.

There is a moss that smothers morning –
came with daybreak in your eyes.

Yeah, there’s a moss that smothers mourning,
And it is deaf to all your cries.

You sewed together all your wounds,
Said ‘last to wince gets out alive.’

Last To Wince Gets Out Alive
Everything about this track shows how hard you've been working at your craft. The open rhythm guitar track provides a good melodic hook. The harmonica is melodic and the tone is excellent. The slide fills are quite nice and add authenticity. One of your best vocals to date. It sounds like your opening up more when you sing. As always the lyrics are excellent. Your lyrics always strike me as Lennon writing things like Strawberry Fields Forever or Across the the Universe. They are abstract just enough to allow the listener to take from them whatever they hear in them.

thanks
so much for the support. I'm really glad you like the direction I'm taking. I wonder if you have any nits to pick with regards to the mix?

Thanks again!

Last To Wince
good grief - your lyrics just amaze me! i agree with andrew that this is the best vocal you've posted to date. terrific work on that harmonica - you are giving lennon AND dylan a run for their money!

As always
your approval means a lot. Thanks for the constant positivity, it's quite uplifting. Re: Dylan and the harmonica: while well-intentioned, his playing isn't something I aspire to imitate. Maybe if I tongue-blocked more I could fully throw off the comparison. Either way, thanks for the listen/comment!

lol
you know, i wasn't thinking of your harmonica playing re: dylan (although i totally see how you would have come to that conclusion). i was actually thinking of your general song writing and the "feel" of your music

Play that harp
THe picking and leading on top of that constant rhythm I feel like Im in the backwoods somewhere listening to someone belting it out The tremolo in your voice really works well and I know there are no effects on it makes it all the more better! Greatness!

It paid off--sounds GOOD! Your voice is much stronger and sure of itself than last I listened--very fine vocal work in fact and the song itself,it's the real thing, and blues is one genre on this site I've some experience with. Keep up the great work! Gave you basically 8's on the ratings scale (although I rarely do that--it's not quite exacting enough I feel, but in a word: very good!) Michael

Blues
Cool twist on the blues formula. Old time rhythm guitar qualities mixed. I like the slide intro, seems almost polyrhythmic with the backing, and works to give a new flavor.

Nice harp playing. Like the tone for the most part, but gets shrill in the upper registers.

some authenticity
I really like this - the parts are good, as others have pointed out; dig the vocals.

On the mix, try this: Play it back on some cheesy laptop speakers, then again on headphones off of your head laying on your desk. I think you may hear some areas in your mix levels you may want to tweak to even things out.

But like I said, it's a good one

Very cool.
Mix sounds fine to me. You sound like Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson [Canned Heat] if you don't mind me saying so. That's a compliment btw!

Nice song, which would sound really good with drums, bass and electric guitar, I think. Full on electric blues!

Your best vocal that I've heard. Both the harp and the slide are sounding good. The rhythm guitar provides a nice anchoring riff.

Authentic...
Hi Ben. This has an authentic blues feel. The harp and slide work really well and sound "live" when coming in and trying to stay in time against the unusual and complex guitar rhythm. Your vocals also suit the style nicely. Well done, Peter

That is
some amazing harmonica. Your vocal has that world weary vibe that perfectly suits the bluesy lyrics. Thanks.

You vocal vibrato
seems to be developing and giving you a distinct sound. Definite early blues sound here. I think the element that holds you back on this piece if I was to nit pick would be the timing. The instruments seem to muddle the groove of the song a bit and lose the beat a little. I also think if you sang closer to the mic, it may help. Sounds too distant, as in the mids and lower timbres seem to get lost in your vocal tone. Nice work. Most people like this song the best, while i agree it is one of your better songs technique-wise I think you have better overall songs that this one. All a matter of taste, nice work on this.

Tight harmonica
Guitar is nice too. Took me a second to orient to the rhythm. It was different in a good way. Well played.

I haven't been playing music for too long. I've dabbled with the guitar for years, but it was only late in 2009 when I started writing my own stuff, and I've loved it ever since. I had always been inventing riffs or short melodies on the guitar, but ... [see more]
