Description
Simply a much better mix than previous rush job (sorry- I really had Rs that up .. I had moved everything into my new Logic Pro 9 from GB .. but I had luckily a GB '11 mix down to compare to.. and I noticed some major cock-ups: namely...

- the mix (and particularly bass) was overall quieter (had forgot to switch off the "Normalizer" at Bounce down.)
- the Digital stepper sound I use at the intro and throughout.. wasn't playing the same after importing to Logic Pro(!) - it
was something to do with the start position for the track echo .. weird. Anyway, bounced out the track from GB and
inserted that to correct
- There was a 3 part harmony (and if Andrew only heard 2.. I had to try and bring the lower register harmony up a bit
- other minor tweaks and slightly different arrangement choices (guitar comes in later for example).

Interesting facts:
- all the guitars in this are done with a midi guitar (YRG-1000 "You rock" guitar)- why? My guitar lead was broke...lol.

Samples used (from www.freesound.org):
Downloaded on December 29th, 2011
S: Grandfather Clock - digifish.mp3 by digifishmusic (I edited this and made it tick/tock at 130 BPM)
S: babycry01.wav by pfly

So my sincere apologies to all those who listened and commented on the previous version (you know who you are)- hope you like the new mix better.

A brief but fun filled demo....

I noticed there is one other song of the exact same title at MJs (by brown trousers) .. and the very close title "Sweet nothing" by sanskrit .. uploaded a while back and not this genre.

On reflection, I hear traces of: Bowie, Beck, Snow Patrol, a song called "space junkie" by the Holy Barbarians.. and even the theme from the Equalizer (Stuart Copeland).

Oh, and why a donut? Well.. it's a sweet 'nothing' 'innit..

Enjoy!

Lyrics
Your sweet nothings,
Amounting to somethings
That I can't put my finger on
For want of trying.

Your sweet nothings,
Mean that everythings something
That's stranger to me than
I can ever imagine.

You're sweet nothings,
Amounting to somethings
That I can't put my finger on
For want of trying.

You're sweet nothings,
Mean that everythings something
That's stranger to me than
I can ever imagine.

:o) It's Caroline!
.. my goodness.. you'll be a regular soon again :o). Ah.. don't tease me.. took me F'n ages to get that sound .. then it just vanished... then a minor panic later, I had fixed it .. pedantic? Moi? lol... you do know I did have an app (Morsemania) for generating morse code of any text? ...I kid not.. used it on http://www.macjams.com/song/59008. Anyways... thanks for stopping in for the listen and comment Brunch. Have a great 2012! Now I better stock up on nicotine gum .. thanks for the reminder! lol.

Tack så mycket Martin
Varsågod! Enough of the Swedish.. I'm from Scotland (but live here). Glad you liked the rhythm .. takes me a while .. just took up drumming more seriously since April this year (this was a major bass drum pedal exercise! lol). I'm a big fan of strings (particularily cellos) in rock/pop music .. if it had frets, I might consider getting one.. lol... apart from the drums and vocals.. this is all midi... even the guitars... which I used the "games controller" YRG-1000 "You Rock" midi guitar controller. The rest I just used my old Kawai K1 keyboard as the controller. Tried 'mastering' in Logic (no Ozone 5 usage on this as yet- my demo expired :o/).

Thanks Steve
d'you know .. I hadn't thought of the "ear candy" reference.. must add to the keywords. Ah.. those samples..from freesound.. (which reminds me I need to attribute).. the baby crying and the grandfather clock... the cycle of time. I was playing with the song being open to interpretation .. like the romantic (with perhaps biological clock ticking connotations) or the important (but missing) apostrophe placement on "your" or "you're", the latter giving it the "Atheists prayer" twist.

A much better mix. Stronger with more punch! I can't believe those guitar tracks are the YouRock guitar. Too cool! This is just a great tune!

Cheers Andrew
Yup, that "normalizer" in Logic is .. fine if you want things "normalized" .. didn't work well on this.
Yup.. the guitars are all played on the YouRock games controller.. through a couple of modified GB soft instr. "Mosh pit" instrument setting.. (mosty fiddled with the amp settings- bit different settings in L & R creates a "multi-tracked" effect). I have a Les Paul and a POD X3 Pro (as you know).. but when your only guitar lead is broke.. they are useless. Could you hear the 3rd part harmony yet btw?

..
Skean will correct me if I'm wrong in saying they're called "munkar" in Swedish.. which I always thought was "monks" (because of the Friar Tuck hairdo looking like a doughnut). I know a few people that by the same token thought they were called "nuts" as in "nuts and bolts" or "deg-mutter". Fascinating stuff.. lol. Thanks for the listen H.

double glazed sweet nothin'
I dunno, this is quite something... very tasty sweetness, with a squeeze of bitter around the edges (that wacky wobbly-synth). This is a smooth and infectious beautiful tune.

That
wacky, warbly synth is the pinch of Bowie .. as Philip is mentioning below.. it really is a mood setter... I like it best when it returns to a slight variation combined with the samples. Thanks for stopping in Eduard, very kind.

Super smooth with a very Bowie synth that really sets a specific vibe. Dutifully backed-off guitars for you. What restraint! Nice.

Thanks Philip
D'you know... I did toy with removing them even.. it is a dilemma for a guitarist to accept sometimes the guitars just have to take a back seat... even if they were played on a midi guitar/game controller.

Fascinating to see the creative process at work. Can certainly see the improvements in the mix. I like the bed of sound you have created and the vocal and lead lines that sit on this. Thanks for the download!

Thanks for returning Philip
..not so creative lol .. just a cock-up with using my recently fresh installed Logic Pro 9 (had 7 before).. got caught out by some default settings mostly on the bounce out.. and have just never encountered that thing with the imported GB file not playing/sounding exactly as it did in GB. Your welcome! Thank you for the download.

Did need more 'punch' - quite happy with this mix now.. but could do with being a bit longer and real bass & real electric guitars .. should hopefully get a new lead today .. yay!

NEW ENERGY, HERE
BETTER Mix, for Sure.
Vocals, in particular, are much more vivid.

SO,
Now it wants a Real Gtr playing the counterpoint
AND
The other Verses that are just Dying to Appear!!

BINGO.

Great Start.
Good Package.
Let It Loose!!

Best,
Cooper

and thanks for coming back for a 2nd listen: I really only tweaked the 3rd part harmony track .. little volume adjustment, compression adjustment and EQ adjustment.. but I think bringing the guitars down in the mix really helped on the vocal clarity front. I agree: does need another verse at least and switching out the bass guitar and electric guitar for real instruments... but I will return some months later on... work will get in the way of song progress in the New Year.

JERRY
I reckon you need a few household appliance noises in there mate. I suggest a) A Hoover picking up bits of gravel, b) A kitchen drawer being opened ( containing ladels, cutlery and make some chop sticks ) and c) Post being delivered (to the wrong address)
Stick that lot in and your sorted mate :))))
apb said 2723 days ago (December 31st, 2011)
lol
'ello mate! You didn't like it then? ;o) You missed out micing up bananas: to hear them squeak as they ripen rapidly...did I send your xmas card to the wrong address? Sorry 'bout that.. glad you got one anyways.. (got the address online from some uk site)...not sure the entire kitchen would fit with the sound metaphor for the passage of life/time (from babe to grandfather) .. but there's always room for it in another song! Keep well and have a great Hogmanny bud. Say "hi" from us from the Greek goddess for me too. Maybe we'll get a song from you in 2012.

Freesound is
like MJs for "sound" recordists. CC licensed .. attribution required (not much else). I've used them before (whenever I need a sound-bite), even contacted one supplier to let them know what I used it in/for.. they were cool. Thanks for the listen and comment Mitchell .. (an old friend of mine thought this sounded "Miami Vice") .. so definitely some '80s in this, but hopefully some 90s too.. might help with real bass/real guitar to bring it more up to date in sound.

.. hmm.. for some strange reason I hear some stereo phasing on the guitars now lol (not noticed before- just on these headphones @ work and through laptop PC)... wasn't my intention... might be some "Tremolo" plug-in side-effect...(used on those blips). Ah well..

Fab vocals, crystal clear mix
Nice use of strings and bizarre electronic sounds, great mix. But your vocals, man, they sound so perfect. They are the true sweetness here. A candied ditty worthy of Bowie, for sure. The baby sound: a very nice detail. Great track.

was part of the quirkiness to try and put the cellos up against the warbly synth- I will need to redo the bass and guitars with real instruments, and another verse at least .. but as a demo, I'm quite pleased with this.

you enjoyed it Heidi. I'm not a singer really, unlike yourself.. as I really don't enjoy singing that much at all to be honest. I muddle through as a reluctant vocalist.. backing vocals I don't mind .. but lead .. that's a pain in the Rs. I prefer doing all the music...and playing all the instruments.
