Stack Come Down

I grew up wondering how much the coal plant emissions might be affecting me and my family. We lived only a half mile away from the big stack.

Stack Come Down

I was one of seven raised in the cloak
of a big tube belching blackfire smoke
Did my Dad die young from the power plume
of the old coal plant near our living room?

A silent killer standing tall
over bluffs and wetlands of Saint Paul
Stockyard stench, mud and rust
where even giants turn to dust

Stack in the sky where the eagles soar
Stack come down with a mighty roar
No more sulfur 'n mercury
Now I'm breathin' easy in my hometown
I'm not so queasy since the stack come down

We were powerless to know the thoughts
of those who sent us kilowatts
Were there really poisons in that cloud?
Did filters scrub that warm gray shroud?

On the river at the High Bridge some call Smith
Come to see the death of a monolith
Down with the giant where the waters roll
Gotta be compliant, don't burn that coal

Gone are barges of rocks to burn
for lamps to light and gears to turn
There's a new generation on the waterfront
where the old coal plant would billow and grunt

I can feel the breeze on the Buffalo Ridge
Clean energies to power my fridge
Water, sun, hydrogen,
Forces of unknown origin

[refrain] [break]

My seven kids were raised in the cloak
Now they're living life without that smoke
No cheap 'n dirty, bigger bills instead
As the saying goes, "Better green than dead!"

Stack come down
Crisp, clean guitar. Interesting song - good lyrics and some neat chord changes. Warm vocal. Much enjoyed!

A compelling story
Your fine voice reminds me a bit in style of Gordon Lightfoot, Richard. A good thing in my opinion. Lyrically, the song tells a compelling story and the sparse acoustic arrangement works just fine. Well done. Regards, Peter.

Thanks so much for your views. It's good to know this song will work in a solo situation on a small cafe or bar stage here in town. I can only produce so much sound with my pipes and guitar!

Skyline changes
Your voice is clear and in fine troubadour form here Richard. The story is a fitting description of the changes we find through time as business understanding and morals evolve.

The refrain, like the eagle, really soars, and the chord progressions take me back to the 60s. Lovely!
