America - Under Western Eyes

 Genre: Experimental

This started as a a sonic experiment with three tracks of bowed processed electric bass. I tried adding other musical sounds - but nothing seemed to work against the dense drone. I then remembered a recording I had of William Burroughs giving a lecture on the book "Under Western Eyes" by Joseph Conrad. I recorded three tracks of the lecture - different chronological segments and let them overlap each other. That sounded cool - but too simple in some way - so I mixed down the three music tracks and the tree voice tracks to tow separate tracks. I then thought about Brion Gysin's cut-ups technique that Burroughs used at times to write with and did the same with both tracks. I chopped them up into little pieces and rearranged them randomly. I have been reading a book called "Rorschach Audio - Art and Illusion for Sound" by Joe Banks that talks about EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) - and decided to add another layer of voice to the mix. I chose Allen Ginsberg reading his poem "America".
The idea is to deal with all the distractions and overlays while picking out recognizable passages of text. Studies have shown that many people hear voices more clearly when there is background noise than they do when there is silence.
Hence the EVP phenomenon that led to practices of spiritualism where people claimed to hear voices in radio static.
I did this all very quickly and without much reflection. I didn't want to get into a game of tweaking and dodging for effect. This is what happened by intentional accident.

Thanks Tim
I just listened on my phone and realized that Ginsberg was not nearly as buried as I intended - and Burroughs is too far back. Oh well - so goes a quick experiment.

Challenging stuff
America stands out even with all the distractions - sounds like those studies might be right.

Really well done.

despite what you think isn't perfectly produced, this piece is dramatically perfect for what you intended and shows the depth of your talent and expertise. Awesome work worthy of broadcast across the country. You should be proud of this effort as it is unique and very entertaining. I've read the three authors. I think you hear what you open to hear despite noise or any distraction. You hear your own name in a crowded restaurant and you hear your baby's cry from a deep, dream filled sleep. Thanks.

Genre Info
Experimental music is any music that challenges the commonly accepted notions of what music is. There is an overlap with avant-garde music. John Cage was a pioneer in experimental music and defined and gave credibility to the form. As with other edge
