Nice intertwining of the instruments - the lines they're playing complement each other. I wondered if a bass could do that first line, allowing the sax a bit more freedom, but I enjoyed listening to the way you develop this.

Thanks!
I think a full combo would be more musical. Just got the samplemodeling saxes and wanted to exercise them more or less solo first :) I will be using them quite a bit in future pieces (probably with more brass, basses etc).

Melody!
Great job on thing... recalls late 50s New York commercial jazz. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for listening
My first piece with the new saxes so I tried to solo them. The alto dominates the soloing - tenor and bari are just short snippets that repeat. I look forward to mixing these in with other instruments and combos with more brass.

That's quite a mouthful...
and quite an earful too ;-) Could you explain samplemodeling to this idiot, please? They sound awfully good to my not-so-sophisticated ears. Also, the piece as a whole is quite listenable, which I suppose is what the Daug means by "commercial".

Hi Richard!
I play the parts with the Akai EWI (electronic wind instrument - which you play like a sax or clarinet but it emits MIDI). Samplemodeling is a company that does extensive sampling and software modeling of live instruments to make the MIDI sound extremely realistic. They do trumpets, clarinets, saxes and other brass. I only have their saxes. The cool thing about the wind instrument is that instead of envelopes and modwheels, you use your breath to control the sound timbres, volume etc. pretty much like a real wind instrument. The Akai lets me choose my fingering method. Since I know trumpet best, I can use trumpet fingerings but play any instrument (or synth) with those fingerings.

Got into MIDI with an early Soundblaster AWE-32 and Cakewalk and later rediscovered with my Apple and Garageband and now with Logic 9 and Akai EWI. Musical influences in no particular order: Steely Dan, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Beatles, Je... [see more]
