Description
This is the second track of my Botany for Boys RPM album. With this track comes 2 confessions. The first is that most of these tracks existed as 10-20 second song ideas. Some of them for years. The official rule of RPM is that it's written and recorded in the month of February, but it was more personally challenging for me to have to finish ideas that (in some cases) were 4 years old. I justify because the hard part was writing lyrics and arrangements for 9 songs in a month. Next year I'll be legit.

The second confession is that this song, Praying for the End of the World, was written and recorded in about 10 minutes on March 1st, 2013. So even when I wasn't working on old material, I was failing to keep to the February-ness of the challenge. You see, I miscalculated the time of my album and had 9 songs at about 30 minutes. So no matter what, I needed another song. I recorded this a few minutes before I ran to the post office on the 1st - and it definitely sounds like it. I'm making up the words on the spot so they're... er... yeah.

Oh yeah... the album title refers to a conversation I had with some friends many years ago. I was explaining that my dad's degree is Landscape Architecture. They didn't know what that was so I simplified it to "it's botany for boys" and that seemed to clarify that matter. The picture is another reference to my dad. At Utah State he was tasked, as part of his program, to memorize the Linnaean names of about a hundred plant species a week. Most of those he's forgotten, but the one I always begged him to say was pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (pronounced "Su-do-utsuga men-zee-zee-eye glauca). Hilarity.

Lyrics
Who cares who says "I don't know"
I'm praying for the end of the world
I pop, you drop, we both stop
Praying for the end of the world
It's true, you do and I do, too
Praying for the end of the world

I try to fly but you won't buy
Praying for the end of the world
You do, I do, and we do, too
Praying for the end of the world
I know you show but I don't care
Praying for the end of the world

Praying for the End of the World
The intro changes and vocals make for a great hook. Digging that bass line and crunchy tone. Downloaded!

Does anyone really judge these RPM Challenges?
Do you get disqualified if you break the rules, or spanked? What really matters is the participation. In your case, you cleared up a backlog of unfinished tunes (a bonus) as well as gaining confidence and a determination to be legit next year. Works for me.
Making up the words on the spot seems to work for you: pop, drop, stop. Davis says you bop, sweetly.

Cool
As an inveterate music-mag reader, I have heard lots of great muso types opine that the best songs and lyrics are the ones that come out very quickly without time to over-think it...
this is a very cool tune... nice hook right out of the gate (wordless, best kind), the lyrics are good, and it has that melodic-garagey quality that I live for! nice post, thanks!
