The Queen of 94

I guess this is basically a country song although the arrangement wouldn't suggest it. It is one that I wrote so long ago it was called "The Queen of 64" at the time. That title obviously had to be reviewed 30 years on. I recorded it last year when I first discovered Garageband. Today i would probably do it differently, but I got used to listening to this version, so I decided to share it with the community. Enjoy!
PS the artwork is as usual by my Danish artist friend Lasse Drejer Nielsen who has sadly been in a coma for a year now after a road accident. This work was inspired by Isabel Allende's House of Spirits

Hail the Queen of the Ball in 1994
Long before she got married long before she got bored
She would wiggle, she would giggle, she would show the boys the door
And be happy with the mirror and the Queen of 94

But the Queen found her king
And the young girl took his ring
And she offered him child after child
Now the king's telling lies
The rings are round her eyes
And the woman sometimes prays for just a smile

Now a slave in his kitchen and a servant in his bed
A stranger to her children and a loser in her head
Slightly battered, slightly tattered, slightly desperate for more
She looks for what she lost to Miss 1994

repeat chorus

On Saturday with friend they play the old songs once again
After dinner, wine and gin she's in the arms of his best friend
As he teases, as he squeezes, as he leads her cross the floor
She's the Queen of the Ball in 94 once more

So the Queen takes a king
And the woman sheds her ring
And she offers him smile after smile
And her new king's telling lies
Erasing rings around her eyes
But the woman finds the girl for just a while

I'm glad you shared this ... it does have a country feel to it but it could also be in the folk genre I think. It's quite a lovely melody. Great lyrics ... sad ... your vocals and writing remind me a little of Leonard Cohen.
Well done. Sorry about your friend. His piece is very intricate. Looks a little like a wood cut ...

Nice flow to the song and the lyrics have something to say. I'm not sure the title needed to be changed - the song says something about the times in which it was written (although it's still going on, which I guess is why you went with the update). Gentle solos and warm vocal. Much enjoyed!

Very winning melody. Like the story, too. I think
it works as well or better as "Queen of 64." Nicely penned tune!

Some fine imagery in the lyrics, Per, and an interesting story, too. Nice gentle arrangement and the understated vocal suits the mood of the song. I am getting a Leonard Cohen vibe as well. Thanks, Peter.
