Honest Man

This is probably the closest I'll come to a political song. It's based off two wonderful talks I heard within the past few years. One deals with the dangerous culture of positive thinking and the other with the archaic nature of our education system. In fact, you'd probably do yourself a better service by watching the videos rather than listening to the song.

Smile or Die by Barbara Ehrenreich: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5um8QWWRvo

Changing Educational Paradigms: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDZFcDGpL4U

I actually really like this song, but it's very hard to listen to. The highs are shrill and the rest is muddy. So I'm sorry about that. The end was supposed to build with more flair and drama, but mice and men and all that.

Don't hold your breath
There's always bound to be some kind of debt
That no honest man can pay
Watch your step
You're gonna work until you've nothing left
That's how we keep honest man afraid
Tell me something
Tell me something we want to believe.

Now hold that thought
I've never met a man who couldn't be bought
Be he a sinner or a saint.
In school he's taught
To take upon him his father's lot
And never shall he break the chain.
Tell me something
Tell me something that I want to believe.

Hold your tongue
Don't let the truth ruin all the fun.
Or you'll see how it "sets you free"
So when the sun
Sets on the shadow of the smoking gun
You'll see just how honest man can be.
Tell me something
Tell me something we want to believe.

Shrill and Muddy
Nothing should be pleasant about this anxious theme. The sound of your guitars reinforce the dissatisfaction and concern over dangerous endemic cultural phenomena. What can I say: it's a shrill and muddy situation.

I guess during the relentless thumping outro I'd like to hear that anguished lead guitar come back in to add a sense of expressive disquietude to the finale.

I like it...all instruments(tracks) work well together. The bass guitar could have been EQed a little better but it works as is.Much enjoyed right here.

Stranger than Fiction?
This feels like something from the cutting room flor of a Bad Religion album. That gruff, treated vocal is super cool and the guitar riffs are suitably angry. Lovely swing to the whole song, relaxed but tense, angry but controlled. Great subject matter too. Positive thinking cults remind me of the old christian con trick of "suffer now and it'll all be great in the next world, now give me your money". It's the same fraud in new clothes. Ugh.
Great tune, that big riff on the way out of the song with the organ is massive. I think you achieved what you set out to ans then some.
I've been remiss on commenting here at MJs o its great to come back and find such incredible quality - and all from just one man!

Driving beat.
I'm digging the unique vocal. Beware of those blowing smoke. Reality often goes up in flames. But, if you want some peace and respite, take some time out from the way it really is and pretend, for awhile. Thanks.

Tell me something...
There's an Airplane/JethroTull/Bowie/Vanilla Fudge-ishness to what I'm hearing, and much enjoying. All sets up nicely for the refrain. Will have to check out the videos.
