Unlikely I'll Be Remembered

Get Flash to see this player.

In February 2014, I worked on making some music for the RPM challenge.

I ended up making 2 CD's, one called 'Anecdotes' and the other called 'Enovoix'

This is track one from the Enovoix CD

I started thinking about the project in January.

I always wanted to return to an idea that Michael2 began a couple of years ago. He took some vocal samples I made which were layers and layers of voice saturated in reverb which resulted in a big wash of choir-like noise, not unlike the floaty vocals in 10CC's ''I'm Not In Love'.

Michael originally termed the phrase ‘enovoix’ as a way of describing these vocal sample files which were kept in our shared dropbox folder. This may or may not have been a spelling mistake.

In the end, Michael made what basically amounted to a thematic collection of musical vignettes, a soundtrack to a movie that has never been made.

Closely Watched Trains by Michael2

It was brilliant and is some of the best music he has ever done (in my humble opinion)

I always wanted to do something with Michael's collection of songs – even considered at one point, trying to find a way of doing a limited cd release. But as with many grand schemes, the idea fizzled out.

Fast forward to January 2014.

I was thinking about what to do for the rpm challenge I decided to create a new set of ‘enovoix’ and attempt to make my own album in a similar vein to Michael's.

My big idea at the end of January 2014 was to make a totally A Capella collection of enovoix based songs

Originally, I thought I was going to use chordbot to generate a series of musical pieces. I figured I would put these into logic audio and then sing along to what chordbot had randomly generated. However, I abandoned that approach just before I began recording in early February.

Instead, I found myself singing along to a load of eno instrumentals, trying my best to sing each instrument line and multi-track my vocals accordingly.

So I found myself singing to pieces like ‘through hollow lands’, or ‘sombre reptiles’. Working with the multi-tracks in logic, I found that when I removed the eno instrumentals, the music that was left no longer sounded like the original eno songs at all.

I further manipulated what I had sung, reversing, time stretching, pitch shifting, saturating the vocals in reverb then revesring them, adding even more reverb then reversing them again till I couldn’t remember the starting points for any of this.

Then along the way, I started thinking it would be nice to add some simple instrumentation – electric piano primarily to create a bit of variation on some of the tracks.

So the 'enovoix' RPM Challenge CD ended up as a mixture of heavily treated a capella vocals, (some with added sparkle from my sonicmagpie collaborator mystified), and some vocals with simple piano/synth accompaniment

This track is representative of the latter

A wash of gentle...
Every note so lovingly rendered...These few chords just echo with a mellow peacefulness that's not easy to find with such measured pacing. But you make it work beautifully, with subtle emotion. This is almost (maybe is!) a prayer. Such peace...and such beauty.
