I Will Listen

It's been a while since I had a chance to get a song completed. My 2006 iMac failed earlier this year and I was without any real recording facility for a while. I've replaced it with a 2012 Mac Mini which had the added advantage of the latest Garageband which is what I've used here. I've also moved up to 24 bit recording which I think improves the vocal resolution immensely.
This song grew organically from the acoustic guitar riff and was borne out of my first try with the new GB software.
There's a lot of different kit in use here, the Vintage V300 acoustic is recorded through a pair of T-Bone EM700 mics via a pair of Behringer valve pre amps ,the vox are all through my T-bone SC 400 condenser direct into my Focusrite Saffire 24 DSP interface.
On electric guitar duty is my trusty Epiphone Dot Studio and the bass, as ever, is my '74 Fender PB.
I guess lyrically it's a love song about being there through hard times as well as good, about understanding and learning about people.

A note about drumming: in the past I've either used Toontrack or Drumcore plugins to produce drums, sometimes I've used an old PS3 drum kit from Rock Band to record my own basic drums. On this occasion I experimented with Garageband's "Drummer" feature and am largely impressed. It's flexible and quick but allows for massive variation and customisation. It's worth the upgrade alone.

Enjoy the tune.

I will listen to your song
I will come back home again

Nothing matters when you’ve got the time
To make it all make sense
You can’t understand the difference
You know I hear your words

What is time but just an obstacle
A cruel mistress now
Don’t you hide inside your melody
Cause I will find you out

I will find you out

I will listen to the song that you are singing
I’ll find you out, find you out
I will listen to the song that you were singing

I will wash away the sin
I will take you in my arms

Only love can ring the changes out
A battle cry for trust
I will always be the easy one
You know I just cant change

I just can’t change

I will listen to the song that you are singing
I’ll find you out
I will find you out
I will listen to the songs that we are singing

No more tears and no more lies
No more angry dar kened skies

Only when the day is done
Only when the truth is sung

One more time around the block
This time its you that’s in the dock

But i wont judge and I wont pout
Cos I already found you out

I love how this song just keeps unfolding
the relaxed vibe and the emotional intensity working off each other. Great playing and mix. You seem to have mastered the new GB. Towards the end I was hearing a little bit of Robyn Hitchcock - minus the snark.

This is a good song. Good job on the vocals. The piano part throughout is a nice addition to the mix. Nicely done!

Quality song, Paddy. I like the mood it creates. You vocals reminded me in parts of early Graham Nash (aka Songs for Beginners), especially given the piano, as well. You are right about the drums. Well done. Thanks, Peter.

Laid back
First impression: Neil Young with a touch of brit folk rock. I like how you take your time developing your story. Tenderly rendered. I have been using a Fender P bass too recently. Talk about bang for your buck. What's up with the dead air at the end? Nice work.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's in the south of the UK in an Irish family. I had always loved music but was never given an opportunity to explore making it for myself. About 10 years ago I bought an acoustic guitar and began strumming in earnest. To d... [see more]
