This starts out based on "An Italian Ground" from a 1700s collection of ground bass variations, and then gradually it turns into a typical VicDiesel piece.

Another Italian Ground
Beautifully haunting opening. I like the variety in the arrangement. How many flutes are you using in the later section? Delightful. D/L

Initially it's two basses and a great bass, later I'm adding 2 tenors, so that's five in all.

I'm enjoying the clear and expanding harmonies and flavors which occur as your song progresses. Pleasing piece to wake up to!

Baroque counterpoint...
...with the occasional "Diesel-ism" to keep things very interesting. I like the way you develop this number with the addition of voices after setting up a number of 2-part sections. A trio, right? Especially nice at 2:30 or so. Most-enjoyable listen. Nice to hear "serious" music conceived of and played so well.

Correct. The first 8 measures is melody plus bass, then I add a middle voice. Second melody line, then add middle voice. And then addition of two higher voices. The original is just melody and bass line, so you could play it as duet, or add a lute or harpsichord or such; instead I add the middle voice and tinker with the implied chord structure.

In past lives, VicDiesel was a country fiddler, a shawm player at the Burgundy court, bellows pumper for JS Bach, Geoff Emerick's factotum, and a beggar playing drums in the streets of Calcutta for alms. Unusually, the memories of all that co... [see more]
