I've moved around quite a lot in my life. Starting from south Wiltshire to Devon,Kent, South London, The East Midlands and now Bedfordshire. At various times I've played various roles in various places to various people. Finding myself back in my old hometown with time just to sit and watch after such a long time away these lyrics flowed out quite naturally in more or less 10 minutes. I married them up to a tune I'd had and posted a pretty rough demo up last summer. Finally got around this week to recording a better version.

I've not been me
For so long
I've almost forgotten
Who I am
But standing here
By the Poultry Cross
I'm smiling inside

Ghosts of past me's
Walk silently by
I let down my guard
Relaxing at last
On the edge of strangers
At the side of the crowd
I'm smiling inside

Right on the very edge of familiar
Absorbing all the sights and Sounds
Ageing memories float to the surface
Come to take a look around

My old town I'm on
Certain ground
I don't need to be here
But it's good to be here
Shut my eyes and then I'm
Out on the Down's
I'm smiling inside

Lovely guitar intro. Gentle, feel good vibe. Nice to hear this song again. All good except, to me, the Smiling/Smiling back and forth is too loud compared with the rest of the song. I had to dive for the volume knob the first time it appeared. Thanks, Mark.

Your lyrics alway have a knack of inviting the listener into your life and sharing the story with us. Its as if we were just walking through the streets of Bedfordshire chatting with you. Love the guitar riff too.

hey mark - i really like this. the delivery on the verse is spot on....and i like what you did with the 'smiling' line....although it's a bit raw at first....definitely grows.
love the 'take a look around line'......wow.....it's really catchy....particularly when you go to the na na - fantastic. love it. cool
really evocative song...the delicate guitar work....the simple shaker going on behind it all.
one of your best.....a rival to 'lapwing' even....nah...nothing beats lapwing :)
well done...great song.
