Description
About eight(?) or so years ago my younger brother Tom---who played drums professionally for more than two decades---sent me a drum track that he probably recorded in some studio in Colorado Springs back in the late 1980s.

When my old Mac crashed six years ago, this track---along with several other gems---was lost to me. To my great joy I was recently able to recover it, and I decided to jam with it old school style.

Some months ago I posted a crude preliminary sketch consisting of some hastily recorded guitar over Tom's drum track. I promised then that I would eventually release a more fully fleshed out version.

To this newer version---with its mighty fine “drum hero” soloing by Tom---I have added a completely re-recorded guitar track, along with some bass and vocals.

Anyway, I hope some of you can enjoy this slightly indulgent sampling of fraternal revelry.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ONE AND ALL!!!

:-)

Lyrics
SIBLING REVELRY

When my brother and I were very young,
we dreamed of playin' in a band.
I had a reel-to-reel and a broken guitar.
He drummed on boxes and cans.

So we wrote a few tunes,
and recorded some songs.
We drove mom and dad crazy.
But it did not last long.
No it did not last long...

Well life soon intervened.
I left in search of my dreams.
For many years after that,
we walked on two different paths.

But now the wheel has turned full circle
for my bro and me.
The time has come for us to engage
in sibling revelry!

Yeah...
We've waited a long time for this...
Show us what yer made of Tommy!

I can see why you were pleased when you recovered this - there's some impressive drumming going on here! Bright guitar and emotive vocal complete the picture. I enjoyed listening!

Tom asked
me if I would consider cutting about 1 1/2 minutes out of the drum solo...I told him he was NUTS! It's among the best I've ever heard. Better than Ginger Baker. Somewhere between Clive Bunker and Barriemore Barlow (both TULL drummers). Upon further reflection, he agreecd it is best to leave the soloing as is. Anyway, I'm damn proud to ferature him so heavily on this track! :-)

Be well friend!

so Cool
Really great that you can communicate this way with your brother. Music and film are a kind of time travel aren't they. I sit here and watch groups of the 60's and 70's on You Tube that I never got to see in person and just think of the years gone by.

Agreed!
I'm hoping we can do more collabs down the line. He's in the process of getting set up for home recording.

Glad you enjoyed it bro!

Excellent
I was lucky to share a similar experience with my brother a few years back - even dropped an olde harmonica into a tune like it was made for it. Great drumming on Tommy's part and cool guitar from you pulling this together.

Thanks Kevin...
Always great fun to "mingle our streams and our times" as the late great Greg lake put it in THE SAGE (E.L.P.). Especially with a talented sibling.

Thanks for listening and commenting.

Love the title. Fine effort turning Tom's fine drum track into song, Mike. It seems the days of extended drum solos are long gone but this is a beauty. Nice one, thanks. Take care. Happy New Year.

RE the title:
I've always been a bit of a punster... Anyway, it does (sadly) seem like this sort of playing is a thing of the past. What a shame. In our day people can win Grammys who don't/can't even play an instrument. WTF!?!?!

Oh well. Happy New Year to you too Peter!

Trippy
Well done, those drums sure needed and deservered a new life, which you gave it generously. Pretty trippy there around 4.20 and more :-)

Thanks and take care,
Henke

Those drums
were denied any life at all until now. This was just Tom solo "noodling" (as he put it) in a studio back in the 80s. Tom played professionally with the Inmann Brothers Band, and as part of a prog-rock duo called Killer Sponges. It's so nice for me to be able to work with him!

Glad you enjoyed the trip!

Tom lived with
Diane and I for about five years, but then moved back to Colorado Springs. We remain in constant contact. He took up painting while he was here in Salem. Turns out he's as good a painter as a drummer! I'm humbled...

Be well man!

ever evolving
hey Mike this has to the definative version. re-imagined very well. the surf guitar sound is quite refreshing. adding the flanger on the drum solo was pretty unique. super job!

Good call!
I did add the flange on that one section. Fortunately, Tom dug it too. Other than that his drum track was hardly tampered with at all. Removed 9 seconds+ out of the beginning, and added a stop at the end. That's all. The rest was a matter of EQ-ing.

The surf sound guitar seemed to fit better than anything else I tried. I always have to resist the temptation to play too heavy.

Thanks for clocking in bro!

Real Live Track
Even from the opening guitar, you feel like you are there in the room with you - the whole thing has a great, live feel. The drums are the real showcase here - go Tom!

Thanks Steve!
The "live feel" was a MUST of course. Glad to know I pulled it off! Especially tricky as the drums were recorded at a studio in Colorado Springs in the 80s while the rest was tacked on at my home in Salem Oregon in jamuary of 2018!!!

Rock on bro!
