Lyrics
The Ballad of the Mobile Phone

Verse 1
You’re driving along in a brand new car
You’re feeling on top of the world
You send a quick text to a couple of friends
And a picture to your latest girl

Chorus
What ya think you’re doin’? Put it away
Please listen to this request
Must be a moment in a busy day
To give that phone a rest

Verse 2
Dinner with the family is a special event
It makes a house a home
The rules of the table are simple enough
Bring your manners but not your phone

Chorus
What ya think you’re doin’? Put it away
Now here’s just a little advice
Turn off the phone for an hour or two
Seems a small sacrifice

Instrumental over verse

What ya think you’re doin’? Put it away
Please listen to this request
Must be a moment in your busy day
To give that phone a rest

Middle
Leave it on the charger
Put it on your desk
Put it in your pocket
Don’t be a pest

We’re sitting in a restaurant enjoying the wine
A cheeky little Cotes du Rhone
I saw four people at a table nearby
All of them staring at their phones!

What ya think you're doin'? Put it away
Now here’s just a little advice
Turn off the phone for an hour or two
Seems a small sacrifice

Phone rings

Hello? No, no, I’m, recording something at the moment, mate. Ah,yeah, yeah, I can get back to you about that. OK, yeah.

Chorus
What ya think you’re doin’? Put it away
Please listen to this request
Must be a moment in a busy day
When it’s time to give it a rest

Coda
Doot doot doody doo doot doot doody doo doot doot doody doo

Surely there’s a moment sometime today when you could give that phone a rest - come on now!

I always like....
listening to your songs. This one is no exception. Nice, light-hearted tune that the Traveling Wilburys could have included on their second album. Cheers...

Maybe I should play this on my phone
just in the spirit of the song? Not! Sounds good on my studio monitors. Hey how come your auzzie accent comes in there when you're speaking on the phone? LOL Love it!

Hi Freddy
Yes, interesting thing about accents and how singing disguises them (although perhaps doesn't remove them entirely) Glad you had some fun listening,Freddy!

phone
I have seen what those mobile phones do. It's a curse.. In the school where I work the pupils neclect their schoolwork, just being online all day. Walking through the halls in school the teachers are the only ones who look around, the rest is only looking on their small screens.
So I can relate to the words
much enjoyed!

The Ballad of the Mobile Phone
Yep, mobile phones should come with a health warning re their addictive properties. Fun song. Bops along nicely. Cool, smooth jazz underpinnings. My pet hate is seeing mothers pushing their baby along in a pram and completely ignoring them while talking on the phone... I'll ring you soon, my friend :-)

Pet hate
Mine is when someone is completely unaware of other people around them, who just stop to talk. It's like a car on the freeway putting its brakes on for no apparent reason. And that's not to mention those who are stopped at traffic lights and are looking downwards (obviously at their phone) and don't see the light change. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the song! See you soon.

Cautionary Voice Male

Nicely done, Philip. In-touch and concurrently detached presents quite an irony, doesn't it? Call-us Interuptus at its finest, here in this ditty. Perhaps we could find new (literal) meaning in AT&T's '80s advertising campaign to generate more long-distance revenue... "Reach out and *touch* someone." ;)

It's certainly hard to believe that the fascination with phones and social media will have no effect at all, even if it's difficult to quantify the effects. Thanks for listening and for the comments, Joe - much appreciated!

Bravo!
Well performed, and love that solo. The message is spot on. The chorus on the phone is a brilliant addition (and the call in the midst of the session too). I can imagine you doing this as a music video which could be pretty amusing. Again, lovely tone on the playing and a perfect treatment of the subject matter with your vocal. Thanks for the download!
