Description
I've been AWOL for a while again.

I've had a shoulder operation (unsuccessful...) and very unexpectedly a mate of mine was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died within two months.

Makes you think.

Could make you maudlin.

Make you want to write a song about feeling sorry for yourself. Even though you weren't the person who died... :-)

All me with Logic Drummer, Logic B2 and Logic Studios Cello/s.

See what you think.

Take care,

Peter.

Lyrics
Epilogue - Peter Bowen April 2018 (Capo 5)

[C] The autumn leaves have [G] faded [F] into my autumn years.
[C] The dreams of youth are [G] jaded. [F] I can’t deny my fears.

[C] My body it is [G] ailing [F] and I have to change my ways.
[C] In hiding from my [G] failings, [F] where are the good old days?

[Dm] Old sins cast longer [G] shadows. [Dm] No new tricks for this [G] dog
[Dm] The story of my [G] life [Dm] begins its epi[G]logue

Life begins at forty, or so the adage goes.
But now I’m nearing sixty, how will that rhyme transpose?

Old stomping grounds of glory are closed and long torn down.
The piper and the jester have already left town.

Old sins cast longer shadows. No new tricks for this dog
The story of my life begins its epilogue.

[Am] I’ve [G] ridden my life, [Em] all the [F] way.
[Am] I’ve [G] ridden it all the [F] way.
[Am] But the [G] sands of time, [Em] turn my feet to [F] clay
[Am] And I’m not [G] keeping time at [F] bay…

Lead break

Family and friends sustain me. They are my Avalon.
But one of them, just lately, has crossed the Rubicon.

Well life and death and taxes are certain in the end.
But I’d give the family silver to see my friend again.

Old sins cast longer shadows. No new tricks for this dog
The story of my life begins its epilogue.

I’ve ridden my life, all the way.
I’ve ridden it all the way.
But the sands of time, turn my feet to clay
And I’m not keeping time at bay…

I’ve ridden my life, all the way.
I’ve ridden it all the way.
But the sands of time, turn my feet to clay
And I’m not keeping time at bay…

Thoughtful words, strong performance, interesting arrangement. Excellent work! Time moves on, but I reckon we'll have enough to share a few more good bottles of wine!

T-shirt wisdom...
Thanks, Philip. Yep, I am over feeling sorry for myself now that I finally found some inspiration again :-) And good company and some red liquid sustenance certainly helps. As one of my T-shirts says, "Age gets better with wine!" Talk soon.

I really
like how you mixed your voice. So intimate. Despite the personal lyrics, the song still gives a sort of warming feeling.

A mix of mixing :-)
Thanks, Sam. I now have an easy way to listen to mixes via my expensive hi-fi system in another room in the house and it is great to be able to tweak a mix between two sets of headphones, my monitors and my hifi system. Glad you like my gentle rage at getting old :-) Talk soon.

The Troubadour looks back
Old dogs stand at the edge of their territory and wonder what is outside. They wonder about places they still might go. They think nothing about the effort required to get there.
I have seen this on the faces of old dogs, heard it in their songs, the honest dogs anyway. Keep on keeping on, that's a notion that might offer some solace. Considering the health history you have shared with us yer not really doing all that bad for the shape yer in?
The thing about writing a bummer is that it is a form a therapy. Song writing doesn't exist, it's that all music is therapy. So rave on brother!
Yer production is more skillful than ever. Thank you for sharing your tunes with us here. The introspective nature of your work is refreshing.

Ghosts
Thanks, Daug. I must admit I am starting to feel my age but the thing that triggered this introspection was the death of my friend. I was drinking coffee with him one minute and then (it seemed a very short time later) he wasn't around any more. I don't particularly fear or get maudlin about death but this particular event was sudden and final. No second chances given. This song is my attempt to make some sense of it all but I know I didn't really succeed, other than to let off some steam. We have trips planned to Northern Australia and Europe already this year so I'm not really about to give up the ghost just yet :-) But I will probably persevere with trying to write a song that tries to put the death of people I know well into a frame of reference that I can reconcile with. I appreciate your listen and kind words. Take care.

Hey Peter... it's been a while since I listened to you. This is so refreshing. Love the warm guitar tone and your warm harmonies.... no... life begins at 60! Man have you grown ... as a songwriter/musician

Growth
Thanks, Stan. I know I have grown in some areas I'd rather not have :-) Must be all that good red wine with Philip... I really appreciate your comments. This is one song that I have written where I could hear a clear arrangement in my head. I often have difficulty with that. Take care out there.

Thanks, Freddy. Logic has recently upgraded the strings and horns that it has on offer. They both sound good. Their new ChromaVerb reverb is also very good. I appreciate your kind words. Take care.

Ailments and operations...
Thanks, Dick. Yes, whenever we have people over for dinner now we nearly always get round to ailments and operations, after what the kids are doing and the parlous state of local and world politics, of course :-) I appreciate your kind words. There is much to think about... Take care.

Appreciative
Thanks for checking this out, John. I appreciate it. The guitar part came together quite quickly. I did spend a lot of time massaging the words into a shape I was happy with, though. Glad you liked it. Take care.

Hand-in-hand
Thanks, Vic. Yeah, age brings with it an entirely different outlook on life. Unfortunately this higher order perspective is, in my case, somewhat dampened by the body limitations that have come along hand-in-hand. 30 years of multiple game-a-week, year round basketball has taken its toll. But I'm not really complaining :-) Just letting off some steam. I appreciate your kudos re the mix. Some of the new tools in Logic and judicious use of stereo panning has helped in that regard. Take care.

Superb
excellent song Peter, makes me think we amateur songwriters/musicians around the world are a "Band of Brother" as Daug says it's that all music is therapy. A real heartfelt song and excellent production/delivery. Just to make you smile I played "Before The Maps were Made" at open mic the other night and a guy said "jeez why are you singing about a time before "mats" were made?!!!

Along for the ride...
Thanks, KC. I turn 60 this year and I'm not really worried about the age side of things. The song is probably more a rail against the aches and pains that have come along for the ride :-) Glad you liked it and could relate. Take care.

Nice
I like the lyrics and there is honesty in your voice. I like the bass line particularly. I dont think you really need the chord change in the middle but its OK. Nice guitar work and vocal work. Ive also been away from this site for 10 years now and it seems alot smaller and the usual suspects are no longer here.

The only critique I can give is that you dont have that certain bravado that comes from performing this song live many times. IMO its what makes or breaks a performance. The vocals are fine but could use that extra something.

Honed
Thanks for dropping by for a listen and comment, kipak. I appreciate your kind words and thoughtful comments. I agree that most vocal performances are likely to improve when honed in front of a live audience but since I only just wrote the song it hasn't been showcased anywhere other than here, yet. I will probably play it solo, live, sometime in the next couple of months so hopefully with practice it will bed down a bit more. Unfortunately I'm never likely to have a cello and organ on standby. :-( Take care.
