Description
I've been looking for a mobile audio interface that can be used with my laptop. Shopping around I landed on the Focusrite site and found this little affordable jewel that I purchased with a coupon deal from musiciansfriend.com. It's bare bones, has two inputs for instruments, pre-amped mic, line in, phantom power all via usb... I was a bit skeptical and wondered if there would be latency issues but pleasantly surprised at how well it handles it. The quality sounds good, it even picked up the tags on my daughters dog as she moved amongst my feet while finishing the vox on the second verse. Included is a membership to a Plug-in Collective that offers free software. Some of the plug-ins I used on this mix.

I've been working on a cover in the tuning of DADGAD and started to mess around with some progressions. 3 attempts trying to record the guitar, I finally found something combined with the right drum track that I thought was a workable song. There are many combinations of progressions that didn't make it to the mix. Most of the guitar was worked out on my G&L tribute, I ended up starting the song with the Taylor acoustic which I think is where this new interface shined. Between the first and second verse the electric comes in, after, the acoustic returns at the end of the bridge. The vocals and lyrics are an after thought with the trusted Peavey Fury bass track and not so sure Strat lead.

It's odd so I consider this experimental.

Fine singing and playing
I have a focusrite soundcard too since 4 years, a saffire pro24, and it's good gear.
enjoyed!

Thanks again for checking out my posts
I have a 10 channel presonus that is somewhat overkill. I really needed something compact that I could plug into the computer without having to lug another power adapter around. For less than a hundred bucks this fit the bill.

Excellent sound quality
great playing and singing as well. I'd say you found a good tool to free up recording. The acoustic does shine.

Thanks Kevin
for stopping by to listen. I am amazed how well this works. It does get chocked up a bit after laying several tracks with a lot of effects but then again, it may be the aging computers I have. I know it happens on the desktop interface.

Nice vocals
Did you get any cool software with the Focusrite? They used to give you some good stuff. Just getting to the electric now - nice. I do not feel apathetic about this song. Quite the opposite!

Yes
the Plug-in Collective that you register to has software to download. It has two DAW's if you choose to use them and all kinds of plug-ins... I'm kind of stuck on GB and Logic but the plug-ins work great. Thanks for the listen and the kind words.

Sounds great, John. I love the whole vibe of the song. The layered vocals work really well. Fine guitar work, as always. The whole package! Alternate tunings always open up new possibilities. I must get back to using them more. Much enjoyed. Thanks. Take care.

I always find myself in a rut and need to come up with something new so changing the tuning really makes me try and come up with something different. It's far and few between now, getting a chance to sit down and work on music. It's been sidelined so much here lately with all that goes on around me now. It's about others I have to focus on and taking selfish personal time is out of the question. It''s nice to get something out here on macjams so I can get some feed back and feel that I haven't lost it. A lot feels unfinished but if I didn't post it would get lost on the hard drive. Thanks so much for focusing your thoughts on the music.

I'm glad you liked this. I didn't really think it was all that special just something new. I'm glad you liked the mix and I agree it's almost... when I post I usually think the same way. This time I used some plug-ins that I'm not use to, I ended up going for a warm sound, also creating the tracks in garage band then transferring them to logic may have degraded the quality somewhat. I need to upgrade to logic x that way I can take garage band out of the equation. You have a keen ear and maybe a second opinion could have helped with the final. Always nice to read your comments on a post.

usually don't read prior comments before making mine, so when I scrolled down to make sure my comment posted, I saw Skean said pretty much the same thing. Glad to know it just wasn't me.

you know I had you on my mind when it came to vocals and helping to finishing this off. I had set this goal to see if I could do it all myself this time rather than going for the easy button and taking it to another level. Thanks for the listen, I know how selfish I can be by not keeping up with everyone else's songs until I post something.

Great tune and sound
Cool song and really good production. I also use a focus rite, I had an audiobox interface but after a Mac update it was no longer compatible The Focusrite works better, so no biggie. Looking forward to hearing more of your work!

Thanks for the listen. I'm really digging the interface for an entry level it does the job well. I know how you feel about interfaces, I'm using an older iMac with a firewire Presonus and I've already had to get an adapter so it would interface with my now old iMac. This works well with the laptop and I no longer have to battle the continued firewire changes apple likes to make. I'm not even real sure what they call it now. Fingers crossed. I'll have to check out your most resent here real soon.

I think a lot of it has to do with equipment. On my old acoustic I found the mic sounded better. On the current guitar the line in works pretty good. Once again, having you hear is special so thanks again.

I love the open D with the topped E just makes the chords drone... this is really well done. My only suggestion is to pull out or EQ the mids.... the instruments are battling and maybe a hi shelf to bring out the highs.... love the lead tone!!...and playing

I hear you
I was a bit skeptical when I heard the last mix. I had bounced everything over to logic, effected, I think that tweaking more effects into the master made it a bit muddy and then my tired ears thought that it sounded like it had too much treble so I checked the eq on the master track and selected warmth. I really need to upgrade to Logic X that way I won't have to use Garage Band any longer. Oh well, next version maybe. DADGAD is a cool tuning, gets a bit confusing when you try to do a lead. Thanks for your input, much appreciated and I'm glad you liked it.

I appreciate you coming by to listen and the encouragement. The interface I ended up buying is their entry level. They have a lot more options to choose from, I was searching for something mobile and this fits my needs. I'll still be using the Presonus with the desktop until both are obsolete and maybe then I'll be checking out a more advanced Focusrite brand.

I think that's the same interface I have. Since I never have more than two signals (LR out of a mixer) it works fine for me.

So the sounds... I think everything sounds fine by itself, but your guitars and drum all have substantial low-mid, so the whole sounds a little boomy, and you definitely lose the bass in the mix. It seems to have a very bright piano-like tone, so that doesn't help the definition either. I would definitely cut a lot of stuff around 200Hz or zo.

I'm a self taught guitar player who started playing at the age of 13. I mix my guitar progressions together, add lyrics and from that point I'll search for vocal melodies. The music I write is about life experiences and some about random subject mat... [see more]
