Dreaming of the Past (w Sam)

Description
I posted this song about this time last year as a solo, acoustic number and I always wanted to hang an arrangement round it.

I asked Sam to share the dream (sic) and he graciously delivered knockout adds and the mix/master, again.

Kudos, my friend.

Sam: brass section, strings, keys, drums & percussion mix, master.
Me: song, vocals, acoustic guitar, bass.

See what you think.

Thanks. Take care.

Lyrics
Dreaming of the Past - Peter Bowen (April 2017) Capo 2

[D] [D] [C] [G] [D] [D] [C] [G]

[D] Sitting by the river
[C] [G] Waiting for the trout to [D] rise [C][G]
[D] The long, flowing river
[C] [G] No need to anal[D]yse
[Bm] The breaking of a [G] brand new day
[Bm] Not much on my [G] mind
[Bm] A fishing rod is [G] just a way
To [Em7] while away the [A7] time
[D] Sitting by the river
[C] [G] Waiting for the trout to [D] rise

Walking down the long road
The sun across my back
Everything I own
Is in a burlap sack
Some days I work for honest pay
Most days I live it rough
Them city-folk drink Beaujolais
Mine? Cheap plonk in a cup
Walking down the long road
Sun across my back

Bridge
[Em7] Ah, the lonely [A7] days, [F#7] caught up in this [Bm7] purple haze
[C] Can’t find my way back [G] home within this [A7/sus] maze
[Em7] A wine cask for my [A7] pillow, [F#7] it’s getting pretty [A7] thin
[C] Can’t tell you where I’m [G] from. Or where I’ve [A7/sus] been...

Lying by the embers
Dreaming of the past
Visions of the Dreamtime,
Stories unsurpassed
The changes that this land has seen
The white sail and the plough
A people brought down to their knees
Their history disavowed
Lying by the embers
Dreaming of the past
Dreaming of the past
Dreaming of the past
Knowing it won’t last…

Dreaming of the Past
Some trademark guitar licks. I like the vocal tone, and the change of that in the bridge. Sam is able to keep the tune flowing, as well as emphasising various elements of it which add variety and interest. I like what this has become! (I do, however, assume that the reference to you drinking cheap plonk in a cup is a writer's imagination at work? 😄)

Sympathetic
Thanks, Philip. Sam has an innate ability to create sympathetic arrangements and the high-level skills needed to realise them. It is why I like working with him.
And, yes, I must admit I am more a city-folk type of drinker...
Fabien Duperray Domaine Jules Desjourneys Moulin-a-Vent anyone? :-) Talk soon.

Great stuff Peter and Sam
Only tiny nit is the drums sound a little dry. Otherwise it's stellar! Love the lite strings.

Highlight
Thanks, Freddy. I really like what Sam came up with when the piano and the strings come in in the bridge. Highlight reel stuff. Glad you liked how the song turned out. For mine, the drums sound like they are in the same acoustic space as the rest of the band with the minimal reverb that Sam gave them, so I'm not convinced more reverb would be warranted. Different strokes... :-) Take care.

I
didn't recall this song until I clicked on your original link. Then I remembered it instantly because of my comment there. Head-slapping moment. Looks like I still liked the idea of percussion since it popped up on this version. Both a fun and learning experience as usual. Great songs are always an inspiration.

PS:@Loob
The dry drums were intentional. Not the best decision?

Win-Win
Thanks, Sam. Yeah, I remember that comment. I guess the drums/percussion negated the need for a tap along effect anyway. And, yes, I learn plenty and enjoy working with you, too. Win-Win. Til next time, my friend.

Nice
Nicely put together. Vocal sounds great and I love the acoustic guitar sound. Good arrangement and nice instrumentation that complements the core vocal and guitar. Nicely done. Peace.

Great balance
Between the music and the arrangement. More than a little Ian Anderson in the vocals too. Great stuff.

Full realisation
Thanks, Graham. Balance and space, I agree. Sam did a fine job bringing this song to full realisation. First time my vocals have been linked with IA. I will go and listen to some of his stuff again. Take care.

Sam's an excellent producer
Some of the quieter songs circa Aqualung sound a bit like this. "Wondering Aloud" and "Blackpool" for instance.

Subtle flavourings
Sig, great to hear from you. Sam and I appreciate your kind words. And, yes, Sam seems to lock in nicely with my acoustic ramblings. He adds subtle flavourings that enhance the acoustic vibe. We’re glad you enjoyed it. Take care.

So Good!
Wow, the smooth sound of the man from down under combined with the brilliant jack of all trades covering it with a delicious sauce! Exceptionally nice vocal here Peter.

Synergy
Thanks, Tom. Sorry to be late replying but I have been on a 4WD tour in the heritage-listed Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. Amazing place. Anyway, Sam and I appreciate your very kind words. Delicious sauce is a good way to describe what Sam adds to my songs. There is a synergy there, no doubt. Thanks for the kudos re the vocals. Take care.
